God is Dog spelled backward... How many people in the world spend their lives worshiping "Dog". This is the backward tragedy of our world right now. What the God experience teaches us is that we are in it... We are the experience by which the infinite intelligence comes to conscious realization. God is not one to be worshiped, or feared, but experienced.

It just so happens when you experience God, you see the profound hilarity of it all. God is eternal laughter, and the eternal source of youthful play, and the universe is his playground.

That's what God is? Why is there so much violence over eternal laughter?

Who is to say that the person feeling connected to everything is delusional, and not the person feeling separated from everything.

Quantum entanglement certainly seems to support the notion that "everything is one".

This is a great point, and well said.  I find it much more enlightening when you answer a question with a question.

What violence are you talking about? I haven't seen violence in years. I find peace, and peace finds me. It's the law of mutual exchange. Movie's have violence, TV gives you violence, News gives you violence... I think the only time I've seen violence in my life it was because of my own thoughts and actions.

Besides God is everything. There is an old native saying... "Everyman has two dogs in his spirit, one good, one bad. Which dog will you feed?"

To me that seems like Orwellian War is Peace talk. War is good for the economy, Shop til you drop, Have a Coke, Ignorance is Strength...

The Mid East is not violence, it is a land mass full of simple people who want peace.

I bet you saw that violence on TV, too.

No, I heard a story of that violence from my cousin. He fought in Fallujah, and one time, while positioned in a tower, a rocket flew not 10 feet above his head.

Sounds like he found what he was looking for... He joined the army, got his gun and went to war. This was his desire(maybe subconscious), and it was delivered. This is the law of mutual exchange. The Law of Attraction.

Peace... I'm going to watch a movie now... Other Peoples Money... I don't know why I rented it... Thanks for the debate. Peace

My point is that it's ridiculous that people fight over God, which apparently is eternal laughter.

There was once an English professor who wanted to study the Zen teachings.

He got in contact with a Zen master, who invited him to his home.

When they met, they sat to have tea on the balcony of the second story.

After tea and exchanging typical pleasantries, the master invited him to look out and take in the beauty around them.

The professor asked what Zen is, and the master said "Zen is enlightenment."

"What is enlightenment, then?"

The Zen master promptly threw him from the balcony to the grass below. Before he knew what had happened, the master jumped down after him, laughing when he hit the ground.

The master then sat on the professor's chest and asked him if he understood. After a moment of silence, they both laughed.

--Zen Koan

Do you get it?

I doubt any of you are practicing Zen students, so I'll go ahead and tell you what I get out of that little story.

Enlightenment, or buddhahood, or being "on top of the game" and "in the zone" is being able to truly live in the moment. The master didn't worry about whether or not either of them would get injured, he just did it without thinking. After the fact, all he could do was laugh about it.

To me, that's God/Buddha/Zen.

What if he killed the professor? Do you think he'd still be laughing?

So is enlightenment meant to be related to the experience that the professor had or was the master 'showing' the professor 'what enlightenment looks like'?

To me, that sounds more like hypnosis than enlightenment. When children are playing computer games, they are often completely focused upon the games, without thinking much. Would you say that the children truly are living in the moment then, and that they are in an enlightened state of mind when they are playing games? I certainly wouldn't

To me, enlightenment is about freedom from intellectual processes in the brain. When you are experiencing the world around you without being distracted by thought, and without comparing everything you see around you to the conceptual model you have in your brain, then you are in an enlightened state of mind.

Of course, the conceptual model you have in your brain also has its value and function. I am not necessarily saying that people should destroy their conceptual models, but rather that people should learn to go beyond their conceptual models if they want to experience an enlightened state of mind.

I was just reading in The Psychedelic Experience forum about the God experience.

You know the one, the moment when you feel connected to everything around you, or in the universe, etc.

In the thread, some dismissed these experiences (sober or under the influence) as mind-tricks, but that doesn't make sense to me.

If that were so, then there must be a neurotransmitter or a combination of neurotransmitters that trigger this feeling, and our brain has to be programmed by evolution to interpret that input as being connected to everything.

This is a foolish way to look at it, though, because there's no evolutionary advantage to feel connected to everything, especially since we have to kill things to survive. It's one thing to feel connected to things you are symbiotic with (like family members), but another to feel somehow connected to a rock.

Okay, so let's look for another explanation.

It could be that it's one of the many false perceptions we have every day. Our brain is telling us one thing, but our consciousness distorts it to become something else.

This is much more reasonable because while hallucinating, or in a state of mind that may be delusional, perception gets completely thrown off and anything could happen, really.

But the person who started the thread, and other people I've known, are complete atheists who believe in nothing supernatural, especially the laughable idea that we're all somehow connected. So why is it that they who are primed to dismiss such things as delusions not reject the idea of being connected even after they've come out of that altered state?

What I'm saying is, where's their motivation to continue to interpret an experience as being connected?

I really don't know what to think about it. I'm a very spiritual person who thinks all things are a part of a greater whole. Therefore, the feeling comes from our innate desire to know that truth.

I just want to see what you all think about it. Not necessarily to argue or debate, but discuss the possibilities.

About 10 years ago I was atheist until I started feeling this connection you speak of through my experimentation with psychedelic drugs and I am now a very spiritual person. Of course there will always be people who think that the reasons for my spiritual beliefs are actually delusions but these people are just afraid and that's okay.

Actually, yes. That is enlightenment.

The key is always living in that state of mind.
