Though it's depending on the time of the season as well. At least it seems like it.
I think it's pretty much like the following:

The mushroom has only a limited amount of energy and nutrients to build fruit bodies.
The further the season (including fruiting) has gone, the less fruits will appear.

If they go low on energy, the number of fruits (or size OR both)is getting smaller, stopping at a certain point (which is probably not reached because cold weather is coming first).

When they run out of nutrients, the mushroom stops producing fruits and dies (or at least stops producing fruits, until there's nutrients again).

Size has been a question. I have found a few different patches. One has large mushrooms 4" or larger and the other has small 1". You think this is dependent on the amount of nutrients found in the duff? Here is an example of the small mushrooms.

My best producing patch has generally small fruits. Similar to those. And speaking of which this is this mornings visit to  my spot. The tupperware is full of the 1/6 of so of the patch that was mature. I do many visits often so i can nab em a little after the veil breaks for potency

Those are about the same size as the ones I'm finding.  All the pictures of big mature ones I see seem to be in tightly packed clumps instead of more spread out like your pic and like the ones I've found.

My observations also support this.

Besides that it seems logically, I think I can tell from my own experience.
Patches that once produce extremely large and meaty fruits, started producing a lot less bigger fruits, or a lot smaller fruits, the more years have passed (without any renewal of the substrate).

So yes! I think so!

As far as I can remember (and this has been discussed quiet intensely), that the pins already contain the maximum amount of active alkaloids. So it doesn't matter if the veil breaks or not.

As long as the fruits ain't damaged by water or coldness, no active compounds should vanish, so it's actually not necessary to pick them, before they were actually able to deposit their spores...

When do you consider the 'veil to have broken'?

hmm.... i was under the impression that the bigger/older they get more psilocin degrades due to weathering and the like. I do allow them to drop spores but pick them before they age too much. The pins/immatures that i have in the tupperware are ones that have been kicked over or broken off as my patch is in the middle of a commonly used shortcut.

I consider the veil to be broken once it has detchached from the cap completely.

This is my first season hunting for actives.  I just moved to the Portland area a few months ago.  Up to this point I've only ever cultivated cubensis in my closet.

So far, after hunting around town and a couple trips to the coast, I have only discovered many patches of Amanita.  But I'm trying to find Cyans.

I gather that their prime habitat is Alder mulch.  My question is: can you find them under Alder trees where twigs and branches have been decaying for years or are you better off just looking for mulch that someone may have used to landscape their property? (I have yet to find any Alder mulch within a mile radius of where I live)

This all makes sense. The larger mushrooms are growing in a less maintained area with larger chunks of wood debris and the smaller ones are found in a more controlled mulched environment. Maybe there is something to be said about the level of human care vs wild aspects in the life cycle of the mushroom?
Oh and off topic..I love carcass!!!

I've found two of these "small cyan" patches, where many of the mature cyans were nickel to quarter sized. I've found many more patches where the mature cyans were between the size of a half-dollar and a baseball. The patches with small mushrooms seem to have less cover whether it be leaves or tall trees. I have three speculations regarding this phenomenon:

1. the nutrient base may be weaker where the small patch is located
2. the area lacks a good cover
3. or the temps shifted drastically, and then maintained at a temp which forced the cyans to go ahead and mature

I've no idea whether these are true, or not... Just my reasoning.

Me and my bro have had a few run-ins with people while picking lately, this one ended quite unexpectedly. We were in lynnwood this weekend and i suggested we walk by a yard i've collected from in the past. We looked quickly and saw nothing in the yard so we left. we were about a block away when a lady from the house yelled at us to stay off here yard or else her 6 foot 300 pound son would come after us. A bit surprised we yelled "OK" and kept walking. I then suggested we walk by a yard I knew was full of wood chips, but never found anything in. The owner of this house has a tree-chipping business. As i look over the hedge into this yard i immediately spot a very massive cluster of cyans, all dug up and thrown about. The owner had dug through the patch to get to a water pipe a foot below the surface. There were clumps of mushrooms and mycelium everywhere so we start collecting what we can. At this time the owner came out to get his mail and sees us in his yard, he says "what the hell are you doing" to which my bro replies "picking mushrooms, you got a hot spot in your yard". The guy was actually pissed cuz he thought we were trampling his water pipes, but i assured we were careful not to step on anything. He saw the mushrooms in my container and asked if we found some psilocybes, I said "yeah" and showed him the bluing stems. At this point he realized his water pipe was fine and he completely changed his attitude, he began to tell us he dumps loads of chips nearby and suggested we search there. I mentioned that we would really like to gather some mycelium from his yard if he didn't mind so we could start our own patches and not go onto strangers property anymore. To this he replied "hold on" and got us a box and began to shovel more mycelium into it for us. My bro and I were very appreciative to him and he was glad to help us once he realized we were up to no harm. We walked back to the car laughing the whole way.

this is my bro's and my haul from his yard. we got lots of big pins he had dug up.

The next three pics are some from seattle last two weekends

These three are a yard in bellingham i spotted yesterday on my walk home from school

It looked like this on every side of me, each bush and tree was surrounded by clusters.

So many amanitas out now

this was part of a ring

This is my first time living in the city, im not used to finding so many mushies everywhere. If your in the PNW and haven't had luck finding cyans this year, you are either: 1) lazy 2) very unlucky 3) blind
