thats why i wasnt sure,because i only saw a few actual wavy caps.they look nice and thick though eh! the ones i get have much thinner stems.

libs are easy once you see one .

Well, there are Cyans, that have quiet thin stems.
This seems to depend on the genetics of the particular mushroom but also (again it seems) to depend on the substrate. If the wood chips they're growing on are fresh (so contain lots of nutrients), the fruits develop bigger and thicker. At least this is what my experience told me and it would make sense.

ya i dont know. i dont remember any of my cyan spots here,through the years, actaully having really thick stems. i know the people in vancouver finding them get huge ones.and you guys down south in washington and oregon get huge ones. but i am pretty far east from the city and the ocean. i dont know if that means anything. i have found them in fresher landscaping which would mean more nutrients in the substrate and the mature ones were still smaller in stature.

i guess i can see next fall after playing johnny apple seed.:wink:

i've pretty much given up on a coho this year...

i'm more interested in finding a few more patches before the season is over.

steelhead season starts soon anyway.

haha ya once shroomin season started my coho fishing kinda fizzled out too. but i know of some spots if the shrooms stop growing i can catch a hatchery up til christmas. its getting prettty cold,but there are still some shrooms growing. i heard years ago you can pick right by the van airport.so when you get off the plane you won't have to wait long.:wink:
  stealie season is coming.i may wait a bit though. i always start too early and get discouraged by the time its actually really good later in the year. if i can get out on boxxing day i may hit the derby though.thats always kinda cool.

the airport mushrooms aren't cyans...and that's pretty much all i'm interested in.

i think they are baeos or stunzii

but yeah i heard that from a few people who have no idea what they are talking about.

fingers crossed for my patches to be full for me to pick tomorrow.

as for fishing, yeah i head up to rice lake for easy catches when I am feeling down after not catching anything in the river.

usually get a few 2 lb'ers every time i go.

straight cyan man eh? you wouldnt pick baeos??i am not quite that picky.:wink: ya hopefully your patches will be nice. we have had some fucked up wet,cold,rainy,snowy,hailing,windy ass weather so if they are somewhat protected you should be ok.
ya i just heard through the grapevine about that too about the airport, never tried it personally.and probablly never will.

i am contemplating one day making it closer to the ocean to pick though.i want to get cyanfibrillosas under my belt.and they apparently love bush lupines around creeks flowing into the pacific.
and bumping into a BC azure would be sweet aswell if they exist.

Those were probably misidentified and are actually cyanofriscosa or cyanescens or azurescens.  Ganymede is the only person who has found cyanofibrillosa in recent history and they were in wood chips in a park.  He posted some good pictures of them, they resemble liberty caps that grow out of wood chips.

well fonda is a stealheader and i can count the number of times i have seen a woman stealhead fishing on my hand. i guess i was genralizing.
and i thought he had a pic of himself before but i may be remembering wrong.

It's been a good season in Portland. Not only do my public patches continue to pin and mature, being visited but not ravaged by others, but after 3 years of attempts there are finally cyans growing in patches I started, 3 of them no less. They just didn't fruit the first year, nor did they fruit during this year's first flush. Patience!

Also for the first time in 3 years, I realize that I have harvested enough, unquestionably, for personal use the next year -- probably even enough for 2 years. It's a good feeling being able to look on a beautiful caramel cap and not immediately think "it's mine!"

Pics are from my private patch's fruits, which are reeeaally tiny! Slugs munching on the last ones in spite of copper barrier strip. I figure I should cover these spots and adjacent areas with about 2" of chips to make sure they have enough nutrients, maybe fatten them up for later years.

really,so it has been misidentified for years then eh!!?? it seems like alot of direct information and specific habitat suggestions.he definetly states bush lupines as being what to look for. does this mean cyanfriscosas are already here in BC? and is it friscosas that he's talking about being specific to bush lupines?
its so damb confusing then. i have owned this book for a looooong time and consider it my bible.

Oh wow guys. I just went to check on my patch and i entered the location from a different angle no more than 20 yards off where i normally do and this is what i found. This took 2 people 35 of straight snippin stems. I filled my basket fast and had to take my shirt off and tie the sleeves and neck off to get them all home.  Sorry about no habitat shots. I wish i had em to.
I feel truly, truly blessed to have found this anywhere, none the less PDX. The earth smiles on me today i guess.:cool:

That is always on my mind while i hunt, but your right. THIS really makes you wonder. I missed these on 7 seperate occasions and i know i walked within 5 feet of them twice. Incredible.

That haul above is amazing!
One of my housemates found another patch today.
In the past week, three of us have found our first patches.

I think its this year in general. From what i have seen (hunting pdx 4 years now) there has been significant increase in hardwood chips use in portland. I see more and more used every year. This years seems to be the first year that some have reached the right stage of decomposition for cyans. The places with brand new chips definately outnumber the older ones tho, supporting my idea. just my observations though.
