Yes Roger, it might be surprising to learn if you haven't seen many mushrooms in real life but when they are small they often have a thicker, shorter looking stipe.

By that same logic though. Psilocybe weraroa would go back to being in another genus despite the fact that genetically there is less difference between it and cyanescens as there is within many species.
As the revered taxonomist Dr Dre said 'morphology aint shit but shapes and tricks'

I never seen a Panaeolus cinctulus in real life, I only seen em in pix so excuse a niggas ignorance.

Fair point, but keeping Panaeolus and Panaeolopsis as separate genera just makes shit more simple.
Panaeolopsis is a good description for the sectoid species of Panaeolous IMO... I would think that Panaeolopsis deserves a genus of its own.

More research has to be done before we can officially discontinue the Panaeolopsis genus.

I'm merely suggesting Panaeolopsis deserves its own genus. I would not discontinue Panaeolopsis just yet.
The caps of Panaeolopsis don't look at all like the caps of Panaeolus.
To keep them in separate genera just makes sense to me is all I'm saying. But this is not up to me to determine. I'm just making a statement.
Ultimately, more research about different Panaeolopsis species should be done before making the brisk comparison to Panaeolus.

I think the idea is that it is some sort of mutation, but personally I do think they are a separate species. A large scale DNA sequencing and microscopy study of lawn pans would yeild the information we need to say for sure
Maybe we could get a worldwide wild panaelous thread going. They are the most widespread and common psychedelic after all.

"OFFICIAL WORLDWIDE PSILOCYBIN PANAEOLUS AND PANAEOLOSPIS SEASON 2021 (NO ID REQUESTS)"
You should start the thread Shroomhunts, just post a pix of a 2021 pan and call it official. I would be keen to see it happen/engage in some discussion about worldwide pans.

January 2021 G. purpuratus

February 2021 G. purpuratus dried up on rotting log.
To much jibber from some but half of it's educational, Mycoangulos are Panaeolopsis sp. from 2021, my cincts are 2021. Like the idea of an international pan thread.

Still a bit dry and warm in Auckland but the anticipation is building

I think SteveSkuxx's find might be from the South Island but I'm not sure, he does not specify.
I just checked a 2019/2020 Psilocybe subsecotioides spot of mine in the dead of the night for fruits for the lolz/piece of mind but there was nothing growing at all, as expected.
Will try again in April personally after it starts raining more. But I would expect Christchurch and other South Island locations to have begun producing already.
