Congrats man! First finds are the tastiest of all.

I found a patch of bigguns today and watched several hunters walk through my patch and totally miss them! YAY!

Nice, I've got three stem butts in cardboard, if we successfully get a bunch of spawn, will the patch of woodchips we implant them in fruit this season or next? PM me if you don't want to clutter the thread.

I'm so glad to post in this thread having been an active contributor!

Transfer your spawn into woodchips by April and you should have mushrooms next season.

It's too late to produce any real fruits from a transfer this year.

So when myself, Smarty Pants, and his girlfriend were hunting yesterday...  I received a multimedia message from a guy that works for me with a picture and stated 'Boss, are these the mushrooms you're looking for?'.

I went to his house today and harvested what ended up being a final count of roughly 100 Cyan's out of his front yard under a little alder tree. :-)  Man, he is one hell of an employee, at work and at home!  He even promised not to mow his lawn and is going to let me spread alder and blackberry mulch all over it. ha ha ha!  WIN!

Crap!  Have a couple other really good pictures to upload, but I guess there is a weekly limit...  Bummer.  Anyway, this was a VERY productive weekend!  w00t!

went back and checked out my spot from a few days ago...it was half-raped with the mycelium ripped to shreds. Whoever did it was kind enough to leave the pins, but the rest of the patch was absolutely destroyed, like they came through with a shovel and just dug it all up.

luckily I found about 1000 more growing 25 ft. away!

JOY THIS MORNING!

I've been trying for 3 years to get ps.cyans to grow on my own property so I can relax about "my" public patches getting raped, the cops getting called about the guy crawling through the bushes in the park with a flashlight rainy nights, etc.

All my attempts have failed. I've cultivated rye from spores, then spawned to pasteurized alder chips and shavings, then buried that in more fresh chips. I've made cardboard spawn and buried that in more chips. I've even transplanted a large volume of mycelium-colonized chips from known active patches that were going to be destroyed. I've got about 8 spots around the yard with these things, and I've been hyper-vigilant about keeping these areas from drying out, being disturbed, etc. And all of it has been a bust: never a single pin.

So this morning I'm heading out to work, and not 10 feet from my door, in our herb garden full of chives and basil and coriander gone to seed, with not a woodchip in sight, what do I see? CYANS! This patch of dirt is under an eave and gets full sun, so dries out and gets no direct rain. I've even contemplated rooting a cactus here. It's fully 30 feet from the nearest site where I've tried to grow 'em, separated by packed gravel and retaining walls. In short, they have no business growing here, what with the soil being regularly ripped up with herb starts and so on.

It's as if the mushroom is fucking with me, saying "hey, thanks for all your effort, but we grow anywhere we damn please. here, have some fruit!"

this is portland: it's not like a common weed here. i'm taking this as halfway serious evidence that the stuff is sentient.

maybe it likes being right near the footpath instead of in the out-of-the-way places I've planted spawn. maybe it likes traffic, as a propagation strategy.

Found another patch today.  It was in an empty lot next to a big fancy house.
Just walked over to the blackberry bushes on the right...

Found a good spot to stop, looked down, and this is what I saw.

Only 21, but I left a half dozen lil guys or so.....

So I got a question for you guys, this is my first season hunting, how often do we go back to get more?  Do they keep producing all season?  Is there anything I can do to help them?  Does sprinking alder chips or sawdust from Sawdust Supply help them grow more abundant, or is it too late for that this season?

Happy hunting peeps!

Go back once a week if your getting good rainfall, and yes they will grow all season. The only thing you can do to help them is let them mature and use scizorrs to cut them out instead of uprooting them. And spreading alder mulch will help next season.

great job watts! and the rest of you fellows

and congratulations wiscokid! that is fucking epic. can't wait to see what you can do with the cyan spores i got comin to you. i'll mail those out tomorrow.

in other news - i found a new patch today! not nearly as big as some of my other ones, but picked 85 mature cyans and left a bunch of pins and teens. too bad i didn't find it sooner - i found at least 50 that were past their prime. all black and icky. icky is the correct scientific terminology right? i think this patch will be a pretty decent producer. i can't believe no one else has found it yet... of course most people are looking in the areas with perfect cyan habitats, and all my patches this season have been in places you wouldn't quite expect them. seems lots of you guys are experiencing the same thing. it sure is confusing the shit out of the noobs! here's todays modest haul - i should have better pics from another patch tomorrow

decent sized cyans - check out the nickel for size comparison
