Ah, okay, thanks. I didn't read the whole thread and was just posting our experiences. Thanks for the input on the habitat and white gills. We'll keep the search up and hopefully have something positive to post.

What about bruising? I've heard that cyans will always bruise blue easily, and I'm using that as our litmus test when we see similar-looking species. How long does it take for this reaction to occur? Is it almost immediate upon picking, as I've seen with cultivated cubes?

Yeah, I've tried a few, but it hasn't really rained since I did, so I'll just wait and hope they produce some decent fruits.

How many of these finds have been in oregon? Iv'e only looked an hour or two in Eugene; but it doesn't really feel cold enough. I did see a few baby cyans at the mushroom festival a couple days ago though - so they must be out there.

and i might as well show off some more flatties in this thread.since there are so many cyans.

i was just thinking,wheres all the baeos this year? ive been looking, but obvously i have good field picking and not so great wood lover picking.

Well, i've been out of town hunting for the last 10 days, so now that I'm back, I decided to walk around and discover all of the mushrooms that had popped up while I was gone, and all I can say is WOW!!!
I found about 10 patches of stuntzii that totaled to a count of over one thousand, and picked mature caps weighed in at about 4 lbs wet. What a season it's starting to become. I'll post some pictures, but the site isn't letting me upload them right now.

P. Stuntzii finds. After taking out the older mushrooms and making a spore solution, the final count was 937!

Portland hard is a tough hunt for me so far. Lots of look-a-likes but almost all without white stems and plain spore prints:thumbdown:

Once you find your first, you will have NO doubt!  And you will NEVER again need to print a cyan.  Your time is near my friend, dont give up!

ya the subfimetarias(possibly) are quite cool.i have only found them a few times. unfortunalty this one dung was the only one fruiting any mushrooms. i wish i got better pictures. i will try the area tommorow maybe so hopefully i can find some more of them, they quite rare in mind or in my area.
i found lots of semis and  possibly strictipes in this area as well.maybe 2 fields over from my flattie field.:smile:

also semiglobattas and aeruginosas,i know not active but what the hell.

I don't know about the bruising, but I do know that I have found lots of mushys that look like cyans but none yet have turned blue. I hope I am not wasteing gooduns.

From what I have read while researching the archieves is that they always turn blue. It sucks when you think you have a good match and come home and the print is rust or white or any other color than it should be. Its a bummer but that is the way it goes. Don't get so hopeful that it clouds your better judgement.

Persevere, my friend. They are out there, right now, but they make you work. I didn't find any in Portland until my second season hunting, after maybe 30 honest hours of habitat scouring. Now it's my third (productive) season and I've got 5 spots. In Portland proper, with the last being in my own damn yard finally. Your day will come, and you'll never forget it.

3 of my spots are in the same general habitat, which is rather large. The stuff is growing in maybe 0.005% of the total hardwood/light woodchip area. If that. You can't just scan 80% and go. Look. Hard. Pretend you're looking for a green M&M on a golf course. Honestly, I think sometimes they are sentient and will find you if you let them. The first spot I found? A 4' square area 2.5 miles from my home, empty lot. What are the chances? I showed a friend once and he couldn't get over how I ever found it. Truth is I wasn't looking. I stopped on my bike to take a phone call, and glanced, and... carmel, silvery white, wavy, bruising blue DING DING DING!!!!

I thought I'd quote this because everyone who's getting into hunting should write this on a piece of paper, attach it to a popsicle stick, attach that to their head so that the paper hangs over their eyes and every time they look up, they read it.

And otherwhitemeat, ya I put in probably a good 25-30 hours hunting then was at a friend's place the other morning, mushroom hunting the last thing on my mind and BAM! Now that I made my first find (or more properly the cyans first found me) I only fear my second will be tough.

And did I mention one of them was growing strait from an old 2x4, when I go back next weekend to check the area again, I'll get pics if there's another one in it's place (HUGE clump of mycellium on the underside and a pin was a-poppin.)

Sorry for ramblin, but I got nothing better to do. Oh and Theylikethatshit, the scene from the Peanuts Halloween with RAF Snoopy was literally JUST on ABC.
