The Orthodox formula is that 'GOD was in Christ.' Now, notice that this is (1) in the past tense, (2) that the preposition "in" denotes a kind of relationship, not an identity, (3) The title "Christ," from the Greek Christos, means 'annointed' [i.e., by GOD], and refers to a Kingly status [i.e., Divine Right of Kings]. This title is bestowed upon the man Jesus (Y'shua in Hebrew, Issa in Aramaic) by the Gospel writers. HOWEVER...the Synoptic Gospels - Mark, Matthew and Luke portray Jesus as the Christ, (Messiah in Hebrew) the Annointed One Who was spoken of by the Prophets of Old [Testament]. THEN came John who identified Jesus the Christ, NOT as a man Annointed by GOD, but rather as GOD's Logos (the Divine Aspect of GOD 'through which' creation occurs) 'wrapped' in flesh [i.e., Incarnated: In-carnate, from carne, carnal, flesh]. The emphasis changed with John from the Existential dimension (the human) to the Ontological dimension (Being of GOD).

Most people don't realize the distinction because the Synoptic writings become 'colored' by the Johannine mind-set. The difference is PROFOUND, and the doctrine of the Logos Incarnate is what effectively separates Christianity from the other faiths. In the statement 'I am the Way, the Truth and the Life...no one comes to the Father but by Me,' indicates that no one comes to GOD except through the Logos - not through Jesus the man, who is no longer existent. As the Christ, Jesus exemplified a human being so immersed in, and so suffused by GOD's Logos, that Jesus and Christ are fused into an Ontologically Unique Being. THIS is Orthodox Christian theology. I'll say to you what I said to myself: "Experiment with Truth." Learn to pray with Christian formulas, but experiment with a sincere Heart to Know the Truth.
