Anthropologist Marvin Harris suggested that Jesus was actually a political revolutionary and militant guerrilla who was elevated by his peers, as per Judaic legend, to messianic status.  Of course, this doesn't really explain the actual message of the gospels, but who knows?  Food for thought.

Yes, the messiah is a figure that is both religious and political.  He is supposed to be a liberator and champion of the oppressed.  This can be seen in Gospels with the Sermon on the Mount and its proclamations that bless the poor, the meek, the oppressed.  Unfortunately, the political aspects were downplayed over time as Christianity became the state religion, but it's never really been fully forgotten, and in each generation there are a handful of Christians who actually take that sort of thing seriously.  Some of them end up becoming saints and martyrs.

No. It's rather a serious comparison between monotheism and totalitarianism.

There are also uncanny parallels between the Biblical story of Moses and the Egyptian account of Osiris.  Some people feel that they both derive from the same Egyptian myth.

If you are curious, there's a little about it here:  http://forward.com/articles/9812/the-subversion-of-myth/

Why did Jesus walk on water anyway?  Was he just like "Hey you guys, look what I'm doing!"  and someone in the crowd said, " I don't like Jesus , he's a show-off."

1.  Isis was not a virgin.  She impregnated herself using the dismembered phallus of her slain husband Osiris.

2.  There are no records indicating that Horus' birthday was December 25.  There is also no mention in Bible of Jesus' birthday.  I have, however, heard that early Christians celebrated Christmas in April, before it was changed to December 25 to coincide with the birthday of Mithras.

3.  No historical reference to an Eastern star.  This claim is entirely fabricated.

4.  Horus wasn't taken to Egypt.  He was there all along.

5.  There is no character named "Anup the Baptizer" in any Egyptian mythology.  The closest thing to baptism found in Egyptian records is the ritual washing done during the coronation of pharaohs.  One searches in vain for any reference to such ritual washing being done to Horus.

6.  No historical reference to Horus having twelve disciples.  There is a mural depicting "the twelve who reap the harvest," but notably absent from that mural is Horus.  There are various references to Horus having both divine and human followers, but nowhere do they ever add up to twelve.

7.  "El-Azur-us" is a nice way of stretching the name "Asur" which the Greeks translated as "Osiris" whom you may remember as Horus' dad.  And it wasn't Horus who raised him from the dead.  It was his mother, Isis.

8.  One can tell these titles for Horus are bogus because they include "the Messiah," which is an explicitly Jewish word and concept.

9.  Not only was Horus never crucified, buried, and resurrected.  He never died to begin with.  The closest he came was losing an eye in battle with his brother Seth.

So, all of this oppression and death of which you speak wasn't really the responsibility of Jesus

Maybe not, but Jesus was still a flaming asshole boss who made all kinds of abusive demands of his followers or he would deny them entry to heaven.

Things like abandoning your wife and children, brothers and sisters and parents to a fate without you, and running off without a look back or concern for those you leave behind:
Quote:
“Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.” -- Luke 18:29

Emptying your retirement savings and giving it along with your home and all your possessions to some poor people, thereby destroying any hope of providing for yourself or your family in the future:
Quote:
“All these [commandments] I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?”
Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” -- Luke 19:20

Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” -- Mark 10:21

Abandoning your just-died father, insulting his memory, and distressing your family by running off rather than respect his memory and arrange for a proper funeral and burial of his body before leaving:
Quote:
...when a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”  Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”  Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”  But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” -- Matt 8:21

There are many more.

Republican Values:

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.
