I didn’t see this reply, my bad.
Here’s the one that got the most growth from spore. It was thin, translucent, and hasn’t changed in I guess a week or so?
Edit: as you can see by the sharpie, this is also made from a dirty LC. It’s the only one of its kind I made, so it might not be the best example. Others are spore and one is a colonized grain. I can take pics of those if that would be helpful, but I can also just let them go for a few weeks and see if they do anything.

And I’ll put my dishes in the cabinet if room temp is optimal and see if anything changes. I’m going to continue making more plates, since I have the materials. It’ll help refine my process anyway. In a couple of months I’ll do a write up and start a new thread if problems persist.
Thanks!

That plate is contaminated, looks like the bacteria won the battle. RIP
Nothing wrong with your agar recipe

Ok that’s good to know. I’m not leaning on agar for results atm, but I would obviously like to get it going to refine my genetics and ensure clean spawn. This was dirty LC, and I thought I might get away with doing a couple of transfers and cleaning it. Oh well!
I have spores galore and Petri dishes aplenty. No harm done.

Can you change the HEPA filter in an FFU to a ULPA filter from the same company?
Will making an actual 2ft deep hood attached and sealed off the front of the hood help?
I'm curious if my FFU is the culprit for satellite growths in my agar dishes.

A quality HEPA filter doesn't need an actual "hood" for mycology IME. If there is contamination happening then there is an issue with your FFU like a leak or a compromised filter, or a bad fan, or mismatched internal space, or your ninja maneuvers in front of it are not up to snuff. Mine is small and I use it right on a table in a carpeted room without a "hood" and I have used them in some really gross places full of ambient spore and animal debris.
Filters can be swapped if they are of the same specifications.

Do you have a picture of your setup? You've sparked my curiosity.

Quick question,
Should someone remove sunflower seeds when using WBS for spawn that will be used directly and not expanded?
No, prep your wbs correctly and they're just fine.

Quick question:
People dunk and roll PF cakes after the first flush. Is there any benefit to adding a layer of verm to a shoebox tub after floating and harvesting?

SeaSalt said: Quick question: What do I do with an abundance of overgrown plates that are knotting and pinning? Is there a limit to how much agar I can inoculate a quart jar with?
My absurdly high contamination rate dropped a couple months ago, along with an increase in home temperature. Now, my home and refrigerator runneth over with 100+ plates. I'm just learning proper grain prep and haven't learned LI or LC. I currently have 28 oat jars inoculated with agar wedges and 36 more to modify.
Quick question to clarify: can I use knotting/pining plates to inoculate grain? Or do I have to transfer again?

I do it all the time because Im old and lazy. They will just turn back into mycelium as long as it is clean.

Quick question: How long does colonized grainspawn stay "good" or usable?
I just started exploring the hobby of mushroom cultivation, and with patience and effort I managed to colonize agar from dried and grounded dried mushrooms! Only problem is, I timed my colonizing hobby a bit too early. I'm going to travel across the globe and be away from home for *three weeks* right about the time when my grain spawn jars are fully colonized.
I really dont know much about mushroom cultivation in general as I'm a fresh noob, so I am afraid that my colonized grain spawn will have "died" by the time I get home.
So another quick question: Could putting the jars in a fridge be a possible solution for stalling growth/death?
And final quick question! And if so, before or after it's fully colonized?
Thanks for helping!

Putting fully colonized grain spawn in the fridge is a common practice when wanting to delay spawning.

Hmm maybe I used the wrong words. It hasnt colonized fully yet, I'd say that 8% of total volume has been colonized as of now. I won't be home until mid-late july.

I would just leave it were its at now. Even when it gets fully colonized you can leave it on the shelf for a week or two just fine.

It is because there is no shaking involved so you aren't spreading the bacteria/mold from the syringe all around like you would a grain jar or bag.
This gives your mycelium a chance to take hold and possibly beat any contams.
