Thanks, this is the guide I wanted to follow for building a water tub. I just don’t have the materials and my paycheck got shorted 8 hours the week rent is due haha. You know how life is. As it stands, I just have shoebox tubs.

The mycelium isn't just growing on top of the agar. It's growing all through it, just like LC. You just can't see the growth inside or on the bottom because there is no air space. That's why as soon as you give it air space, it very quickly fuzzes up on all sides exposed to air.

Lol I actually was about to bump your question because I too am curious.
I may be wrong but I believe mycelium will grow into the agar in a translucent state, and just becomes visable when it reaches the surface and has access to air. I could be wrong though.
edit: hindsight was faster

If it grew only on the surface, then when you dumped a wedge into a grain jar, you would see the mycelium spread from one side of the wedge, around the sides of the wedge, and then moving to fully colonize the back of the wedge, It wold take 4-8 days or so for that to happen (for a good size wedge) because it would move at the normal rate that mycelium grows. Instead, when you put a wedge in a jar, within 24-48 hours every visible surface of the wedge has mycelium growing out from it, and it's an even fuzz - not a movement from the top-side.

A good example of mycelium growing through agar would be the sandwich method. Just because you cant see the mycelium doesn't necessarily mean its not there.

So a relatively easy way of confirming this would be someone with a microscope slicing it apart and viewing it no?

As an example: the myc was growing on the other side but you can see the grains on the bottom side of the plate colonizing already as it’s barely passed the edge on the opposite side

Always thought it grew only on top since agar was always referred to as “2d grow medium”
But good to know, thanks hindsight!
