Hey Pan Gang,

I'm thinking of building a JCM-style fruiting chamber but I'm having trouble finding affordable air pumps rated that high in galons per hour (JCM uses 250+ gph). I was thinking of making a slightly scaled-down version of the JCM FC with less airstones, a bit smaller in size, and with less potent pumps.

Has anyone had success with a smaller-scale JCM FC? What specs did you use?

I randomly read some pages from this thread and saw that odyssey had great success with a more budget version of the JCM. Soo... I guess I'll just pull the trigger and order a somewhat decent pump and a few airstones that can be run under the pump's specifications. I want to use this for stone producers as well since misting them all the time will become annoying in the long run lol.

First pan cyan grow! (Weza) spores -> agar -> LC -> sterilized manure based substrate. cased a tray today and put it into the tent. followed Asura’s method as closely as possible and used their casing recipe as well. it seemed suuuper wet but its the first casing ive made so i dont really have anything to compare it to hah.

Jomanda: I don’t use a JCM style chamber, and while I would assume a lot of airflow in the JCM is great seeing as how it’s always going to remain very humid and at the proper temp, I would think that even a small economical pump would produce more than enough airflow for mushrooms grown in a tub. Worst case scenario you can always add additional cheap pumps if what you start with isn’t enough but I doubt it will be a problem.

I've got a write up of my setup, I use with a smaller tub and smaller pump. I found getting my head around pumps and their stats a bit confusing!

Start up

5 minutes later.

What I've learned so far is my humidifier is bottlenecked by my house. The 3 foggers and 120mm fan can push more air and humidity than it can handle. Swapping to a 3 inch or better hose soon.

Mostly for gourmets and cubes but for sure running some pan cakes and tamps in it too.

WOW Jake! That is impressive!


Anybody that is wanting to grow pans for the first time, I strongly suggest buying a print that Jake made. (From a vendor, not directly from him.) Having a clean print to start with makes getting clean transfers from the germ plate WAY easier.

The PHV print I acquired was SUPER clean, and that was before he updated the labs. (I figured it had something to do with him using a HEPA filter for his FC intake plus great technique.) Obviously agar is ALWAYS recommended, but let me share a story about how clean the print was.

I was still in the mode of reading everything I could find about Pan cultivation when my spore prints arrived in the mail. I wasn't at all ready to begin. I lacked some key ingredients to make agar, didn't have petris, didn't have straw, and no fruiting chamber ready.

I read about manure cakes, and I did have some manure left over from past failed attempts to grow pans. I had verm and BRF from growing cubes, so I decided to make some manure cakes, a couple of spore syringes and went for it. That's right, direct spore inoculation into cakes! I didn't expect anything other than contams, but I wanted to get some experience and try to apply some of what I had learned. (I used BJ's recipe, I hadn't seen Mac's yet at the time.)

I also got some WBS and decided to try using it for the first time. (Before this, I had only grown cubes using PF cakes, then used popcorn and verm monos. I wasn't even using proper bulk substrate! I used cheat techniques to make LCs without a SAB, and had only experimented with agar a little, mostly without success. I was a total hack! :grin:)

Since I was really just wanting the experience to learn a new grain prep, I inoculated some WBS jars with the spore syringes as well. I really didn't expect that to work, but the manure cakes and most of the grain jars colonized.

The Florida Pan did have some issues colonizing, so I know it was fighting some contam. Swabbing those spores to agar definitely confirmed this later. I had a really hard time getting clean growth from that one.

The PHV colonized everything quickly, and the next thing I knew, I needed a FC. I didn't even expect to get to that point, but I did want to prove to myself that I could get some fruits before I invested in everything I needed to do it right. I had failed a few times before, and I was looking at everything I wanted to buy with a lot of hesitation and doubt.

I also attempted my first ever grain to pasteurized manure/verm bulk. It colonized as well, so I cased everything with pasteurized cactus soil.

I had to build a makeshift FC using what I had on hand, so I came up with something loosely inspired by JCM's FC. The details of that aren't important, as I wouldn't duplicate that again, nor would I recommend what I had built. (It was NOT a proper JCM FC.)

Anyway, here are some of the fruits, the first Pans I ever grew:

The big guy on the RH side of the tray provided the clone tissue that went on to grow everything that I have shared in this thread so far. Looking at these old pictures, I hope that was just overlay in those cakes that was bruising due to poor conditions!  :rofl2:


I didn't use any of the grain from the Florida strain. It didn't look as good and I didn't have room for another tray anyhow. I only put two of the Florida cakes to fruiting. They are in the corners, and they didn't put out much. Those were the tiniest things I've ever seen! I was able to microdose on them a few times, so I know they were just as potent as the PHV. I can't wait to give them a real go and see something with a different appearance than what I've been growing. (Even though I am in love with the PHV. I think it has the most elegant appearance of any mushroom I've seen.)


Once again, I'm not recommending direct spore inoculation to anyone. I won't EVER do it again since I finally learned how to make and use agar. I just wanted to share this as a testament to the quality of Jake's spore prints.

Wow I am getting exited to start with pans.. but first I need to get those outdoor woodlover patches going.. I was thinking about using the woodlovers primarily for microdosing. And go with the pans for those very high dose occasions... or maybe I'm just making up an excuse to grow both..

A well I don't want to miss out on this season's harvest.. so I decided to focus on that first.

.. I do notice so much love here at the community. I chatted with a few members and it is nice to see the sharing, exchanging information.. the willingness to help another. Hope to get started soon! Already I would like to thank everyone who's made an effort to help me out. I guess there must be a postman who happens to be a mycophile too as unfortunately some mails are taking forever to reach me.. or are intercepted by customs for some vague reason.. (I should see some clearance fees popping up if they do).. but yeah despite being puzzled about that :confused:, I hope to contribute here in the course of time :thumbup: and thanks again everyone!

Any of you guys who have run a Martha/tent/fogger long term. What fan are you using? I'm having no luck with PC style fans.

Also what are you running for humidity settings.

I'm using a 4 inch inline booster fan. There are also inline high velocity fans, but those push way too much air. The little booster fans are perfect and relatively cheap. Make sure you get one that comes with a fan speed controller.

Also, they aren't waterproof, so it should not be mounted directly to your fogger tank lid. I have a pre-filter and a HEPA filter for the intake. The filter sits on top of my tent, and the fan sits directly below the filter. My tent has a 4 inch port on the top that the fan rests in, and flexible ducting connects it to the fogger tank. That distance of ducting is what protects it from the humidity.

The booster fan I use looks similar to this one:


I don't use a humidity controller, I use repeat cycle timers. I don't even try to measure what the humidity is, I just go by appearance on the caps and casing layer.

Thanks man I got a house of hydro fan and a replacement waterproof fan otw. If they don't work this time I'm going to go with an inline on the tent instead of on the bucket like yours. I was super pleased with the house of hydros output but I think it might if gotten damage in shipping or storage.

I'm able to get more than enough fog I just can't keep a fan
