The Official Outdoor Grow Thread * 18
    #27349372 - 06/15/21 01:47 PM (2 years, 7 months ago)

The name says it all, Welcome to the outdoor thread.

The outdoor season is upon us and although most of us grow indoors there are a few out there including myself that enjoy utilizing some outdoor space for a good outdoor bed.

Whether it be a compost pile full of spent substrate or a pile of contaminated tubs, utilization of contaminated grain spawn,  or just a good ol fashioned intentional outdoor bed spawned with clean spawn, this is the place to post it.

Feel free to post any outdoor bed, whether they be cubes, pans, gourmet, whatever

I'll get this party started but I encourage those who have outdoor beds to post their grows here in one place so that us outdoor mycophiles don't have to search far and wide for these great post's.

All of these bags/jars were bacterial:
9 bags of MS PE, 3 different TOC clones, melmak clones, some MS RustyWhyte, and MS APE.

All mixed, now time for 1/4 to 1/2" soil casing layer (unpasteurized):

Grass seed was sown on the soil layer to aid in climate control at the surface.

First pins appeared June 10th under the light of a solar eclipse, which is kind of cool.

A few days later:

A great way to "dispose" of less than ideal spawn. New pins coming in daily.

I'll also add this post by BlueBayou, a team of shroomery members who put out the best outdoor grow that I'm aware of to  help kick things off:

Quote:

BlueBayou said:
The thing about a patch this size is that it makes its own heat. Pine needles make a fine warm bedding and the straw/hpoo raised beds easily generate enough heat if you build a greenhouse around them. There's a picture with a Rambo knife for scale. Oh, yes they are cubes. Not sure what kind. Cubes are cubes.

The spawn run was 2000kg organic oats prepared in 5kg bags. These were sealed and steamed in a custom built block building. Blocks were stacked and later removed. 96 hours then cooled and knocked up.

I supported horse troughs on blocks and placed a double turkey fryer burner underneath to boil the wheat.

Right now I have about 100kg of dried cubes in my garage so I am edgy. But I wanted all of you here to know that shroomerites be kickin it out. When I say I it means BlueBayou which is the name of a team effort of shroomerites. Some still here. Some not.

Now, to be sure that you're being perfectly safe make sure to ID your shrooms. Its doubtful that you'll have a contaminant mushroom side by side but you never know, nature is a funny lass.

To ID your edible cubes there are a few identifiers that go with Psilocybe species:

1: Dark purple spore print
2. Bruises blue
3. Partial Veil
4. semi-gelatinous separable pellicle

When in doubt make sure to get all of those and you won't feed yourself or your friends some fucked up little brown mushroom.

Happy shrooming!

I dig it. I have played around with random outdoor grows but my region has pretty limited times the weather makes it possible. How do you deal with any contams if they pop up? Is the bed just done and you move on?

Contamination isn't a consideration when growing outdoors, that's why it's a great option for contaminated spawn. Just let nature take it's course and don't let it dry out.

Check out the trich growing in the soil casing:

No big deal.

I want to put out a couple of large plants on my condo balcony when I am done with my shoebox flushes. Anything you can think of where I can get mushrooms but not kill the plant? Or should I just do large planters with potting soil and mix in the used up spawn and substrate?

I dont see why mushrooms would kill your plants, but yes, you could spawn some substrate into a planter.

I just bought some tiny novelty straw bales from the arts and craft store. I'm going to soak them in water for a couple of days and then make an open air spore syringe to inject the interior of the bales to see if I can get them to colonize and fruit outside.

p9, very excited for this.
All used subs get tossed in the garden, compost pile, or with the chooks.
Get some monsters over the summer, will check back in.

Might as well make the best of things during outdoor season. The cage keeps the critters out ; )

I bought some small novelty bales from the craft store and am soaking them in soapy water for a few hours:

Then I'm going to load this spore print into a syringe and inject into the bales.

Going to toss them into a shaded part of the yard to see if I can get anything to grow. I don't have high hopes but I'm bored and why the fuck not:shrug:

I dig that box you built. Looks like it will keep out mice/rats/coons plus you can turn that angled back towards the south and create a shaded area. I have a pile of old tubs begging me to do this.

You could try bleach cleaning as well if you're interested,  I used to bleach bath straw for a while when growing oysters to reduce gas usage and the cool down time.

I'm not concerned about contamination at all, I'm mostly using the soap as a wetting agent. I'll be mixing that print into a glass of water outside and then aspirating into a syringe so cleanliness isn't going to be a thing her, not necessary for outdoors.

Bleach seems like an odd choice but if it worked

Yeh I pasteurized primarily but tested out bleach few times with success, I just found it was almost a delay rather than a cleaning, the mold returns but you give the oysters a foot hold which is enough for them to establish a healthy network.
