The name says it all, Welcome to the outdoor thread.The outdoor season is upon us and although most of us grow indoors there are a few out there including myself that enjoy utilizing some outdoor space for a good outdoor bed.
Whether it be a compost pile full of spent substrate or a pile of contaminated tubs, utilization of contaminated grain spawn, or just a good ol fashioned intentional outdoor bed spawned with clean spawn, this is the place to post it.
Feel free to post any outdoor bed, whether they be cubes, pans, gourmet, whatever

I'll get this party started but I encourage those who have outdoor beds to post their grows here in one place so that us outdoor mycophiles don't have to search far and wide for these great post's.
All of these bags/jars were bacterial:
9 bags of MS PE, 3 different TOC clones, melmak clones, some MS RustyWhyte, and MS APE.




All mixed, now time for 1/4 to 1/2" soil casing layer (unpasteurized):


Grass seed was sown on the soil layer to aid in climate control at the surface.
First pins appeared June 10th under the light of a solar eclipse, which is kind of cool.

A great way to "dispose" of less than ideal spawn. New pins coming in daily.

The thing about a patch this size is that it makes its own heat. Pine needles make a fine warm bedding and the straw/hpoo raised beds easily generate enough heat if you build a greenhouse around them. There's a picture with a Rambo knife for scale. Oh, yes they are cubes. Not sure what kind. Cubes are cubes.

The spawn run was 2000kg organic oats prepared in 5kg bags. These were sealed and steamed in a custom built block building. Blocks were stacked and later removed. 96 hours then cooled and knocked up.

I supported horse troughs on blocks and placed a double turkey fryer burner underneath to boil the wheat.
Right now I have about 100kg of dried cubes in my garage so I am edgy. But I wanted all of you here to know that shroomerites be kickin it out. When I say I it means BlueBayou which is the name of a team effort of shroomerites. Some still here. Some not.

Now, to be sure that you're being perfectly safe make sure to ID your shrooms. Its doubtful that you'll have a contaminant mushroom side by side but you never know, nature is a funny lass.
To ID your edible cubes there are a few identifiers that go with Psilocybe species:
1: Dark purple spore print
2. Bruises blue
3. Partial Veil
4. semi-gelatinous separable pellicle
When in doubt make sure to get all of those and you won't feed yourself or your friends some fucked up little brown mushroom.
Now for some outdoor bed theory:
Don't put tubs outside to grow as they would inside.
Outdoor grows are best accomplished by creating "gardens", "beds", or by spawning flower pots, buckets, etc, with the intention to allow them space to grow and interact with their natural environment. The fungal colony has evolved to live outdoors where it can freely move, live, and develope it's metabolism in a way that suits the environment.
Our houses are better suited to mold and bacteria, if you attempted to grow mushrooms without the proper techniques or equipment indoors, you'd have mold and bacteria more often than not. This is evidenced by the failures of new growers.
Mushrooms are suited to their particular environmental niche, outdoors, that's why you can find them there, successfully fighting mold and bacteria. Proper equipment and technique is less important outside because the organism does the work, not the cultivator.
By growing them indoors you remove their natural ability to move and fight environmental competition by providing a hospitable environment more suited to the competition. When growing indoors we need to provide an ecological vacuum by producing sterile media so that the colony can get a foothold and flourish unimpeded by aggressive competitors in such a restricted/unnatural space. Even a single bacterium can quickly reproduce and ruin your results, mold is definitely unacceptable.
The use of tubs outdoors will just produce the same problems outside, you can prevent this by removing your contaminated substrate from the tub environment to use as "spawn", this process is called super spawning. You can bury the substrate in a shallow "grave", intact, or super spawn to a bit more hydrated substrate in a garden or bed.
The beauty of the outdoor environment is that it's an open environment where the organism is free to be itself rather than constrained to an environment better suited to it's competition. It's not that contamination is less frequent outside, it's that contamination isn't really contamination when all is allowed to take place naturally in it's natural environment.
Microbial contamination is the unintentional introduction of microbial agents such as bacteria, viruses, chemicals or parasites, therfore "contamination" doesn't technically exist outdoors.
Consider weeds, there are no class or order of plant that is by nature a weed unless it's a plant introduced into a monoculture crop that shouldn't be there. The environment determines the definition. Dandelions are only weeds (contaminant organisms) when grown on an old mans front lawn, but never when growing in a field of other wild flowers.
For an intentionally purpose built outdoor bed you'll still have to produce spawn (or save your contaminated spawn) and provide a shady, moist environment for the colony to get a foothold and thrive. Overall, this process is considered to be much "easier" than indoor grows because the presence of competitor species (contamination) isn't as much of a problem.
There are beneficial bacteria in the outdoor environment, and the colony can live relatively happily next to ubiquitous aggressive soil molds like Trichoderma. This living arrangement will not fly indoors, or within the tight confines of an encapsulated environment without producing deleterious effects.
