 OUTDOOR GROWING WITH BOUGHT COW SHIT

Howdy everyone,
The other day a friend of a friend went out supply shopping and bought some stuff (verm, peat moss, bird seed.. yada yada) which included a big bag of cow shit. He made sure he didn't get one that was wet, or just dry cow pats. This bag seemed to be ground up (kinda like the consistency of potting mix, but with a few large chunks) and just very very slightly moist.. He read on the back 'this may contain things such as: fungi' ..a little light bulb switched on in his head.
He got back home and didn't have any spores yet so he figured seeing as he had such a giant bag of shit (which cost about 7 bucks Australian / 3 bucks American) that he'd spread of a bit on his garden at the base of a big tree, kinda under a little shrub to give it some protection and water it. Well a few days later and after a bit of watering an a bit of rain he has just noticed what appears to be a light growth of mycelia around the edges on one side, the mycelia also appeard to be growing a bit on the woodchips which were underneath the shit.
Anyway, he was just curious..
can anyone give any information about growing outside, or something like this?
Has anyone had any good results from trying this?
There is a lot of stuff about 'contamination' of PF cakes and having to throw the cake away even if there is only a small site of infection when on the other side might be a good lookin shroom, does this apply to the cow crap method?
Any feed back would be great =D

I read somewhere about not watering the substrate once the mycelia has started to colonize.. but now the rain has stopped and the poo patch seems to be drying out, there is some worry that the mycelia is going to die..
should it be watered?
Anyone know any good outdoor growing faqs/teks?

no...you don't mist once pinheads formation begins, this is when you want to water at the edges of either your casings or your patch if you will. misting once pinning begins cause abhorts.
