Nice patch Rex :congrats:
I reckon they all look good to pick, except for the pins obviously.
And really, what reason would you have to wait?

I took a pair of random tripper backpackers for an education in the mountains today and showed them how to hunt for subs (and incidentally how to identify alutacea).

It took them a little bit to get their eyes attuned but in the end it was a good harvest for 2 hours with a pair of n00bs

Sorry no "in situ" pics today but the guys were a little trigger happy. I was very hands off, being in teacher mode; I kinda had my hands full just verifying their finds and trying to keep them from getting lost.

Finds were made in eucalypt sclerophyll forest in NE Vic, 600m ASL. For those keeping track of conditions, the alutacea are becoming bigger and more frequent, the occurrence of healthy, meaty subs is getting more frequent and the altitude of their required climate is definitely lowering

I was hoping that a bit more rain would help them to grow a little more, any thoughts on the odd coloration of the subs in the third picture?

Nice work everyone!! Loving the eye candy provided, mighty fine work to all.

I had a quick search of one of my older patches this week and found quite a few edible pine mushrooms, such as saffron milk caps and a few slippery jacks, but nothing magical just yet

But I have a very good feeling about Friday

Good luck to you all!

I hope to be back soon with some mouth watering shroom porn for you all to admire.

In the meantime all I have to contribute is the inactive edibles found recently.

Take care out there and good luck 😎

Your third pic looks to me like some dry-ish specimens showing the blue oxidisation an the caps. Mixed with their natural yellow colour it makes them look green. Sometimes they can kinda look like an eye when the umbo (nipple) and the outer ring of the cap are blueing like that. I have picked a few in my time that look just like that  :eyeball:

As far as letting them grow more, you are taking a couple risks. Someone might harvest them before you or something might happen to them like slugs, council spraying or a heavy downpour damaging them

When I was right into cultivation of cubensis etc the persistent theory was that active alkaloids were at their highest concentration in the mushroom just as the veil opens, meaning that as the mushroom matures it doesnt make more good stuff, it simply gets bigger, thus diluting the potency by weight.
I suppose this is more important with cubensis as they are 1/3 strength of subs but the theory still stands IMO. Gagging down 3-5g of dried cubes (or 30-50g fresh) can turn ones stomach :puke: The less I need to eat the better.
I personally prefer to pick subs that have matured enough to sporulate but I dont necessarily wait for them to get huge, especially in the wild where so many other factors are at play.  :2cents:

Last season was very good to me yet to get out this season but will be going soon for sure, it's good to see you guys are starting to come across some it gets me excited. Does anyone look for any others besides p subs? They just seem so easy to spot and find so I haven't bothered with the others don't know if I'm missing out. Last year I used a fan and damp rid method  to dry I'm thinking of getting a dehydrator is there any online ones and of you could reccomend ? Cheers in advance and Happy hunting

Dw I picked them for safe measure. Left the pins, hopefully we get some more rain soon in the inner SE. I have a suspicion that I'm the first person to stumble upon the patch since its in a fairly inconspicuous location, but if anyone else knows it please look after it :mushroom2: Do you know if manually watering patches is effective when we go a few days without rain?

Yeah “Psubs1”, I was walking along a lake track and in a grass patch I think I may of stumbled across some Psilocybe Semilanceata. The only photos I took when fresh were sent to my now ex partner but didn’t save. I got some dry photos but they are too dead to identify.

I don't imagine you'll be able to get much of an id using those pics but if that's all you have it's probably about a gram or less anyway so I'd just throw em out and find some more, the season is still young after all...

4 hours walking around high altitude pine plantations in the south east. Season is clearly juuust starting, was so happy to stumble across the first pin poking through the wet grass, standing all alone. I love hunting in the pines, breathing in the fresh air, the smell of decaying wood and the humidity among the trees. The peace and gentleness in the atmosphere. It's a special place.

As a seasoned hunter I know not to pick pins, but i just couldn't help myself this time round. They're so potent! These plantations get buldozed every few years anyway and the amount of patches in this area are massive. Cannot wait to go out later in the season for the big hauls.
Good advice is to spore print on tissue, blend it up with water, put it in a drink bottle and distribute back into the patches, or into new mulch garden beds around the suburbs and check back next season  Spread 'em far and wide!

Strange I thought only Subaerignosa grew in VIC. Shows what I know. I've probably left psychedelics lying around all over the place then LOL.

We have at least 5-6 different species here, actually!

Woah I had no idea either! Since 2011 I have been under the impression only subs existed here. Is there a resource here that I can reference for species/images?

Same here. Where is a list of the active ones in Vic?
Would be good to have the first post of this thread list them and pics of them.

Also I have never had success out in the wild. I've checked pine plantations, state forests, high altitude moist regions. I can drive hours away from the city to state and national parks and find zilch... Pine forests always seems pretty devoid of any mushrooms in general. Why?? All I see is a bed of pine needles everywhere.

Sorry James-It you are incorrect
The very first post of this thread shows Psilocybe Alutacea fruiting and there are also a few Psilocybe Semilanceata "Liberty Cap" pics from Ent in many of the official season threads in the past, probably also in this thread too.

This website is your best resource for all those questions, just learn to use the search function guys...

Click here to see a list of psiloscybin mushroom locations worldwide and scroll down to Australia

In addition to those listed for Victoria, finds of Psilocybe Papuana and Psilocybe Tasmaniana have been reported but never definitively proven and I have first hand reports of Psilocybe Cubensis and Panaeolus Cyanescens group being found in the Upper Murray Region just south of the Vic/NSW border during late spring/early summer....

Click here to see Heyowana's thread showing Papuana, Tasmaniana and Alutacea in NSW, the theory is that Papuana may run all the way through the Great Dividing Range well into Victoria

Now all you gotta do is go out there and find em, happy hunting peeps :hatsoff:

Also worth adding that anecdotal evidence suggests Papuana are insanely potent, even more potent than Subs.
