Had good luck around local parks seems to be Abit early though for mature subs left heaps of pins, what temperature do you recommend drying in dehydrator ? Cheers

@Psubs1 Set you dehydrator as low as possible to avoid destroying any goodness.

There are some beautiful photos coming in peeps, I am really happy to see the season has begun for just about everyone :snoop:

To those of you who are yet to make a find, don't give up hope, it is still early days

I went out to check a couple small patches which I found in the pines almost a month ago, only to find a few small mature subs that were almost rotted through at the base of the stipe (stem) and a bunch of dead blue/black pins due to a change in local conditions :sad:

It just goes to prove that there is such a thing as too much moisture

This prompted me to go for a casual wander through some bracken and blackberry areas I had checked a month ago with the hopes of finding something to make my efforts worthwhile
To my amazement I stumbled across a couple of "mother" patches that had obviously spawned the smaller ones I had been checking. All in bracken and grass, one big patch leading into the next with heaps of mature subs, some possibly up to 2 weeks old.
This demonstrates that it is worth rechecking some places later in the season as patches in the same location don't necessarily fruit at the same time.

Sorry for the poor quality pics but the light was bad and I was too excited harvesting such large clusters to pay much attention to my photography



Today I achieved my personal best for picking in one location, almost 600g of fresh meaty subs


These were found in NE Vic amongst grass, blackberry and bracken fern in a pine plantation, south side of the hill from 800m down to 500m ASL

Nice pics monsta. All this rain is pushing them out. I checked a patch 24hrs later and the number of pins had pretty much doubled.

Regarding drying them, afaik putting them through on max heat should be fine. Drying them as quick as possible may even be the most effective way to preserve potency. I dry cubes and pans at max temp (and currently the subs I just found) and have never noticed potency loss.

All these pics are amazing!

This will be my first winter back in Melbourne for 8 years! Thought the conditions would be perfect for a hunt on the weekend but found almost zero forms of mushroom activity North of the city. Will have to check on some old favourites in the East after next rains...

weather not looking too good until june...am i wrong by saying this season is starting a few weeks later than previous, i recall someone saying the seasons have been slowly been pushed back over the years

No. This season is consistent with the last 2 seasons. Mother's Day is traditionally the beginning of the season.
