Took a few post-lockdown mental health hours this arvo and went for a look out at my usual 'spot' to see if the recent rain had caused anything to happen... Either things are winding down or someone within 5k of this spot is onto it
Found a few small guys and a kinda ugly larger one I wasn't sure about (ID req thread here). Here's the only pic I shot of a couple of cute pins growing straight out of a decaying euc branch. Pinched a chip of well myc-infected wood off to try and propagate.

I'm only new here myself (first season), but you'll have more luck if you starts a new post in the main "Hunting and ID" forum - there's no IDs in season threads, and usually someone knowledgeable responds pretty quickly in the main ID area.

Well said oneirowalker. A hello, please and thank you never hurts either. People are so short these days on the internet like all real life courtesy just gets bypassed completely. I'm at the stage now where i just won't respond to such entitled requests. That and blurry photos. The thread title clearly states-

Hey all, late to this thread but having a great time reading through it. It's my second year hunting, in a new location as I've moved, and have had a great season! I'll post some pics later.
A couple of questions I'm hoping you kind and knowledgeable folks can help with.
In one of my spots I keep finding healthy pins, leaving them to check back in a couple of days, only to find they've dried out or blackened without developing further. This happens to pins, as well as to small but mature fruit in this location (it's dense-packed tan bark, never seen any growing large here). It's not just lack of rain either, sometimes this has happened when we've had good showers. So:
1. Anyone know why/under what conditions this happens? 2. Is it worth picking the mature little guys with blackened caps? Are they still active? 3. I know subs can be a bit dry and still fine; but any guidance as to how dry is too dry? 4. Taking immature fruit is bad form, and I definitely don't want to be That Person; but the way these pins don't develop *kind* of makes me feel like I should just collect them at the point where they start to turn bad, since they're just going to dry out/rot anyway. What do you guys think about that? (Ok I feel like maybe I've answered that one for myself in asking it - Don't Take the Pins - but I'll leave it in in case of other opinions or in case others had the same dilemma).
Adding a pic of the poor little babies for reference. Any thoughts/discussion appreciated. Cheers!

My 2cents is that unless the rain is substantial, as in rain that’s set-in and constantly for 8hrs, the growth of the fruits stalls and the caps start to yellow. The blacking can then occur when dehydrated caps then get wet again.
No doubt that there still active.
There’s some decent rain coming across the state tonight and Tuesday. Maybe your patch will fruit again as it seems it never really got started.

Presumably my last big pick of the season. So I’m getting started with some home cultivation working with a couple of clones and spore inoculations… I’m going to science the shit out of this.

Thanks! That's good info, tracks with what I've seen.
The patch was producing mature fruit at the peak of the season, though still pretty small. And even then some of the pins were 'stalling' as you said - just a smaller proportion when the rain was good.
Fingers crossed this week's rain does bring forth some bounty! I'm in a lower rainfall part of the city, maybe I should head southeast for a forage now that the radius is lifted.
Here's a pic from the same patch in better times. Not the most impressive but it's been solid.

Hi all,
As I said earlier I'm late to the thread here but really appreciating the chatter, info and helpfulness in this community. Here are some happy snaps from this season - my second hunting and first in this area. Not done too badly for a newcomer I think!
End of May, found my first catch tucked away about a week after the last drop of rain. Some kind folks here (in another thread) helped me confirm the ID.

June was GREAT. Once it rained, it poured.

Slowed down a bit in July, but still some hidden gems to be found:

Let's hope August brings more goodness!

That's a damn impressive haul. Good to see too that the fruits were able to reach full maturity, as in, you've got this patch to yourself. Shhhh, keep it's location quite.

Painkiller said: According to this video presentation Psilocybe subaeruginosa patches need the temperature to be 4 - 5 degrees celsius to fruit. From my own personal experience sub hunting I can say this is accurate.
I hope everyone enjoyed this years season to the fullest. I sure did.
By doing what we do, with every passing year we get closer and closer to psilocybin mushrooms being legal, or as I would rather see, completely unrestricted.
So good work everyone, you all deserve a good pat on the back. Future generations would be infinitely grateful for what we do.
Thank you
Thanks PK, that's a good video. It certainly helped me ID the other mushrooms that I've seen in the location of subaeruginosa (Cortinarius, Ceres and Philiota).

Thanks Fuzzyface!
Sadly the ship has sailed on the spot staying quiet, after my first couple of collections there were definite signs of disrespectful cowboys tearing the place up. Still get the occasional hidden one but nothing like it was in the good old days of mid-June *nostalgic sigh*.
I don't mind sharing a patch, the earth gives freely etc etc. But why do some people have to be arseholes about it?

How's the season looking for everyone now? All my spots tapered off by the end of June unfortunately . I regret not taking my camera out more. I get so nostalgic about the season when it's ending lol.

I'm about to hit up a few spots today, hoping that this freezing weather and that bit of rain coaxed out some little gems but I never have much luck in the suburbs so who knows. Anyone else getting the love?

I checked the three local Melbourne spots where I found decent fruiting and there were a small number of pins, like 3, at one only. So nothing to get excited about. It seems that my seasons at least is pretty much over.
I'm spending my time now trying frantically to finish cultivating my own outdoor garden patch. From what I've read on other threads I'm a little late getting everything in the ground so the mycelium has time to establish itself before it gets warmer.

Yeah, one of the patches I visited after the lockdown was completely dug up. Someone came along and removed ALL the mycelium/substrate. From what I've read Sub mycelium does thrive in disturbed environments so I'm sure that patch will be okay for next year. The only thing that would wind me up is if the person who's removed the top soil is doing so to grow and sell shrooms for commercial benefit. You're right, the earth gives freely and psycociblin in particular is a sacred chemical with enormous potential to help promote mental health, cure addictive behavior and combat inertia. So, it seems contrary the the sprit of the Sub to be an egocentric arsehole and sell it for profit.

So yesterday I had the chance to go for a biiiiig long walk along a stretch of suburban track outside my normal area, all either lined with tanbark or bushy gum tree bark/leaf litter. Found NADA - hardly any inactives either.
Today I hit up my normal spots and got a handful of nice friends from one, but the others were completely dry. The ones I did find were *really* well hidden - had to dig through grass and bark to see them, and only did so because I knew exactly where to look.
My learning from this year's experience is that trying to locate new patches outside of peak season is a mug's game.

I found my first proper batch of subs this morning! Super exciting! I had the day off work and went for some lockdown exercise in a eucalyptus forest just near my house. I spent a good 40 minutes looking around, finding some polypores, listening to duck calls circling around me, getting my pants wet in the creek.
I found a couple of small subs in the area about a month ago and had almost given up on finding anything else this season. And that's fine - the journey of finding them is a big part of the whole experience for me. But as I walked down the stream and alongside a fallen tree - bam!

This big fella flagged me down. Next to him was a mostly-destroyed sub, and nearby was a smaller and darker friend. All just hanging out under this tree. Turning around I spotted a few more popping out from underneath some more eucalyptus bark.

I left a few behind so they could do their thing. I might go and check on the spot again next week. It's not the kind of place many people would check. It's hard to get to and it's in the middle of nowhere. I've never seen anybody else wandering around. I don't suspect there'll be many, if any, coming along and digging them all up.
I'm printing a couple and have the others over a fan as I type. I'm super happy I managed to find a batch before the season ends, even if it's not the biggest haul. It will do just fine for me for the next little while.

Nice work finding those outside of the suburban-woodchip setting. I've never really looked for subs in a bush setting, it's so much harder then just spotting a bunch of woodchips and ambling over to see if there's anything there. Which is exactly what I did today and found this little guy + a few developing pins that about 5 days away from picking.
