If it is a well known nature reserve chances are others are already looking there, your best bet is to just go out and look.

Not sure about the altitude thing...
I’m just above sea level. Like a minute to the beach.. mine pop up early in the darkest dampest spots, the more exposed or drier patches come out later. Maybe it’s more of a localised moisture thing, moreso than altitude anyway?

If you do sufficient preparation and research the chances should be high.

Prior to my first hunt I studied maps and browsed through heaps of previous seasons postings on here, I literally clocked up tens of hours doing this. Then on my first hunt I checked out some spots based on where I thought I might find them in a suburban setting after consulting Google Maps. The first few spots yielded nothing then bang! Jackpot! That blue bruising on subs is so distinct and stands it apart from all other brownish mushrooms.

Altitude is only important as a localised reference to conditions that are correct for fungal activity. It's all about moisture and temperature gradients as you go up or down the mountains, my height references are indicative of this.
Yes, higher areas come on first because it gets colder and wetter there first :sporedrop:

Here in Northern Vic it stays pretty warm and dry for most of the year so there is less fungal activity in the low lying forests. Mountain hunting is my only option and it means a lot of walking and getting an "eye" for the areas conducive to mushroom growth.
After a couple years practice I can now drive up a track in season and literally pull up the car in an area that looks shroomy (green and moist), feels shroomy (cooler and more humid than surrounding areas) and smells shroomy (this is a funny one, it just smells shroomy to me, no other way to describe it) and have a win. It actually surprises me how often I park next to an unseen sub, only to find it on my return to the car

I too do all my location research with googlemaps and have a pretty good success rate; I'd like to think all the info in my posts will help others to be able to do the same. I mean, isn't that what we are all here for? :hatsoff:

Altitude itself isn't a determinant. It just so happens that conditions are usually colder/wetter at higher altitudes. Subs are already fruiting in some micro-climates in suburban Melbourne

I was pretty lucky on my first hunt last year, found about 100 subs smack bang in the middle of a suburban golf course. If you're hunting on a nature reserve and know what you're looking for I'd say you'll find some good shit

This weather is glorious !
My trusty patches on the peninsula let me down last season for some reason.... mAybe my spots aren’t so secret anymore or maybe it was the weather....?
Anyway, a week of temps dipping under 10 degrees and plenty of rain should see some serious fruits appear!

seeing some ceres popping up around my area, however still seems way to dry. is seeing ceres pop up a good sign for subs? i tend to find that ceres are stronger and more tolerant to heat.. i could be wrong though

Yeah I agree with ceres being a bit more heat tolerant but they are defs a good sign, I've seen them grow alongside subs

Just this morning a was catching the train and saw a golf course that looked perfect for subs, I think I'll stop by on the way home and maybe have a look around. How much better are pine trees than eucalyptus trees in terms of chance of fruiting. I'm pretty sure it's pine but I just want a little affirmation.

I get you completely, I have spent hours researching a looking for locations, I haven't got someone to show me the ropes so I've just been learning myself, I can safely ID subs 99% of the time so spotting them shouldn't be an issue.

The types of surrounding tress don't really matter as much as the decaying foliage itself. As Subs are saprotrophic so they create their own nutrients from decaying matter.
As opposed to mycorrhizal mushrooms who need to source nutrition from the roots of specific plants & trees where they lack certain enzymes to create these nutrients from decaying matter themselves.

As mentioned earlier the two most important factors to take into consideration are Temperature & Humidity. Its all about those micro climates.  :mushroomgrow:

Anyone willing to teach me hands on mycology around victoria?

Very keen enthusiast(a psychonaut in the making 😂) just opening the pages of the world of mushrooms. Went on several hunts but picking mushrooms with just a bit of theoretical knowledge is a bit intimidating. Any tips or advices would be greatly appreciated too. 😄😁

Happy hunting everyone.

Not sure if Victorian members are aware, but EGA is holding an event this weekend.

https://www.entheogenesis.org/garden_states_2019

I am doing a workshop on basic mushroom cultivation, plus plenty of other amazing lectures and workshops happening.

Checked a suburban patch I know today and found this. Debating whether or not to pick some of them as some are starting to look malnourished and in need of water. Thoughts? At the moment im waiting for some more rain. Found Inner SE suburbs of Melb at roughly 20m ASL.
