Re: The OFFICIAL OVOID SEASON THREAD 2017 [Re: stevo]
    #24236938 -

Went out for a couple hours  last night at 2 of my spots and got skunked again...I think the wild ones (not on mulch) are still a week out around here....haven't seen any dryads saddle yet and those always seem to parallel the ovoid fruiting round here.

Koods is killing it as usual in the Maryland /DC burbs...can't be too far out here yet just up the road.:mushroom2:

Good stuff Textured sounds.....I'm gonna venture out again in next couple days...see if the 85 degree temps coax any out.:mushroom2:

Unfortunately, this is what I've been running into.:mad2:....good ole celandine.....pretty to look at but completely carpets the ground.

Spent all morning up to my ankles in it.  Still nothing going on, a week out at best.

I would rather look through 3 feet tall forests of stinging nettles then ever bother with those plants again.

It is literally impossible to find anything under these....if you're lucky and get a lot of rain a few ovoids will grow tall enough to peek out over the celandine, otherwise, we just have to wait it out....lesser celandine peters out after a few weeks...especially after a few days of temps in the 80's....I already began seeing some begin to yellow and wither that are getting direct sunlight yesterday.

That's exactly what I thought.  Every time I go out,  I have to flick ticks off of me.  EVERY TIME!

So I will ask in here as well. I put some Ovoid spores to agar, got bacteria and thin wispy fungi of some sort, hits side of container and goes up plastic. Hard to see on agar, could it actually be Ovoid mycelium or do any of you think its cobweb mold? I ask in here as well not many people even germinate Ovoid spore so going to be hard to find help I think.

I don't think that's cobweb.  Cobweb is light and fluffy,  and it usually shows up in less than 24 hours

Koods, I might have asked this of you last year BUT can you take a shot of your hunting grounds?  I get the habitat they grow in/around & near BUT being a VISUAL-PERSON , seeing these examples would give me a better insight + narrow down possible hunting locations when out scouting new grounds.

Is two days of rain enough for em to fruit?

im probably wrong but arent the spores distributed thru waterways? would it be a waste of time to walk thru my woods (no real streams in walking distance, but theres a retention pond out there) or would there be no ways for the spores to have reached it.

I just thought I'd check in nice finds y'all in  warmer climes.  nothing to report in NJ haven't seen Coprinellus micaceus, wine caps or anything else for that matter but  I don't mind waiting a couple weeks

Cannibinated,
You asked what are the chances of finding them in wood chip mulch FWIW all of my finds have been in chips ranging from a thin layer of mulch in the nature center to a thick "dump" from storm damaged trees and all were in or adjoining parks and my 1st was in your neighborhood. I had a 350 mile drive to Pittsburgh and picked a few potential habitats along streams and rivers using Google and my last stop was in Pitt - I was pretty bummed because I came up empty and as I was getting in the car to leave something in my head said look at the chips by the fence right in front of my car. I saw clumps of black dots that turned out to be old dried ovoids and didn't see what was growing 2 feet away until I bent down to check out the "anomaly".

My advice – if you were in the red climate zone which I think you are that -look for mushroom like anomalies in woodchips whenever the opportunity presents itself for few weeks every year - they are not always obvious. Of course keep hunting suitable natural habitat. Though there are plenty of mushrooms of interest in the forest  The namesake of this thread is not among them
Happy hunting!
for reference

I'm a little jealous of all you mulch bed ovoid hunters. The quantities I'm seeing posted in those is ridiculous. I have 10 spots and only one is a mulch bed. Each spot will only produce a few mushrooms to a handful each flush with some very rare occasions of massive numbers. Even though I get lower numbers something about finding them wild makes it feel so much more badass.  I found one new spot today on the totally opposite side of town that I usually hunt. Also found a few nice sized morels.
All my other regular spots are still not producing at all. I've only found ovoids this year in new spots.
