Last year

This year

Well be at least three weeks more like five weeks behind last year. Last year leaf out was 20+ days ahead of average. This year we are 10 days behind

Mostly depends on ground temps the tree leaves are not the only indicator, if we get some high temperature rains things could get rolling quick. Got big floods in the plains from snow melt, washed out most the decaying wood. Mulch spots gonna be the go too for early season harvests.

remember now the sun has phases(or maybe its our orbit or something like that) just like our seasons that operate on a roughly five year time line compared to our yearly seasons so im sure that has a pretty significant effect on plantlife and such too right? maybe almost on par with the change of seasons id assume

Solar irradiance as measured by average watts per square meter varies about 3% over an entire solar cycle. This cycle can be seen in the global temperature data. It should be noted that despite a rather deep solar minimum over the last few years, global temps were still hitting record highs.
Seasonal variation of solar intensity is much greater. The amount of energy received in the summer is 50-60% higher than in winter

dizzy_simmons said: It seems like all the “perfect” ovoid habitats I find have fallen & dead standing box elder trees that are booming with wood ears & dryads.
Does anyone find those at their spots?
Are dryads & wood ears good indicator species, or do they outcompete ovoids?
When I see the dryad's I know the ovoids are close to fruiting in the early spring. Dryad's usually don't compete with ovoids and are highly outnumbered.
I find all three species of fungi (dryads, wood ears, and ovoids) in the same areas with lots of box elders. But IME, ovoids are always the hardest to spot.
This reminds me I need to figure out wood ear foraging. Spending too much $$$ these days for the desiccated ones at the Chinese market.
The wood ears are all dehydrated just sitting on the trees waiting for you. I picked 2 big handfuls of crispy dried out ones on a tree last week. They rehydrated into enough for a big mushroom sandwich. All the ear jellies are safe to eat so you're good.

Interesting never thought to harvest the dried ones, is flavor impacted at all compared to the fresh ones? I have a list for edible mushrooms, I'll often eat them fresh as a snack if I get hungry in the woods. Or bring them home for use in cooking. My favorite dish is chicken pot pie with chicken of the woods and oyster mushrooms it is next level, easy to cook for the whole family too

this years ovoid season coincides with the emergence of Brood X, the largest emergence of insects on the planet. 1 million cicadas per acre. Gonna be nuts

Excuse my ignorance of cicadas but I see them almost every year not sure as to why the go crazy every 17 years thats quite odd maybe I'm missing something? The thought of thirty trillion cicadas emerging at the same time here in PA is alarming... is it similar to how grasshoppers can enter locust phase and swarm crops???

The fastest way is to get a large bed of chips or mulch, then fill those cardboard pop trays with pinning clusters harvested from another mulch patch with the mycelium intact, bury the trays in the new patch and keep them moist you will get fruits immediately and the growth will be more aggressive than starting from sstembutts, or grain spawn.
Edit sorry for obnoxious dub post

There are multiple kinds of cicadas. I'm pretty sure some are annual species. But there are a few species that emerge at odd intervals of years, the interval is always a prime number. The biggest group are Brood X, which show up every 17 years. They're smaller and redder than the annual ones and there are many, many more than you can imagine until you've seen it.
