Most of them drop spores just very lightly. They grow very very slow when it's cold out so sometimes you can catch spore deposits. Fruits growing invitro from logs and under debri have a much better chance survival in the harsh environments.

I've had a small cluster growing in my yard for about 2 weeks now. Not fully matured or stalled, just taking they're good ol time. We've had at least a foot of snow and a bunch of rain in those 2 weeks. Resilience is strong in these

Yeah they can still grow in really cold temps.
We looked in a spot that's at the base of a valley and does not get very much sunlight. The fruits were struggling but still saw some fresh healthy pins.

The mulch beds struggle to produce fruits in these cold temperatures. When it is below freezing on a regular basis the pins without leaves as a casing will either abort or mature while remaining flat to the surface with very short stems and mangled caps. The natural fruits seem to fair much better in adverse conditions than man made mulch. Still managed to pull 600g wet from this bed, mostly tiny aborts.

Forget it! I have a chance to go today, and if they can still fruit in the snow, which it doesn't snow here, I might have a chance today!
Wish me luck!

lol. anyway, these still amaze me. they must be more wide spread then 'known' fruiting in such a variety of conditions!

They are definitely more widespread than currently know, I have found cyanescens beginning to naturalize here, I would bet that ovoids are in almost all the states with a zone 5 and 6 planting zone. Commercial mulch distribution is likely the cause of this. There are still some frozen fruits here but almost all the pins have stalled. Feburary fruits looking unlikely. :[

I'm thinking instead of waiting towards the end of April like I always did before, I'm going to start looking around the time of my morel season, in late March. Because last season I hit up my spots too late and only found enough for two trips the whole season

Morel season and ovoid season are one in the same here, they grow in the same habitat at the same time, often only a few inches apart.

It is the total opposite here in Kentfucky, and I have never found an ovoid ever before the tail end of April, or past the first of June.
