I guess they could be, I've just never seen this phenotype with the caps lined with white and so consistently wavy throughout the whole patch, but ovoids have a notoriously wide range of appearance so that could be the explanation.

Yeh for sure, lots of variability in appearance. These are a bit funky lookin but positive they’re voids, found in exact spot I found in spring and bruised nice and blue a while later

I thought ovoids stopped flushing after the first freeze or something like that? I've gone out to my spots after lots of rainfall and humid days, yet the spots are still barren..any reason why that is?

Not sure tbh could be a number of different reasons. I think it’s got a to be stretch of days below freezing, as we’ve only had a few nights drop around freezing. And of all my spots this is only one that’s producing for me so far this fall. You seeing any myc?

I’ve found them growing through the ice in January, but it’s not typical, usually they all stall when it drops below freezing for a couple days

I looked all over for years and ended up finding motherloads of ovoids 20 feet from my back door. Once I knew to look for box elder. I have a decent sized creek right out back. I mean in may I can literally walk out my back door and smell them , a smell I'll never forget.

That smell has drawn me in from hundreds of yards away, absolutely intoxicating once you know who it is.
Not only can you get ovoids from box elders, but you can tap them for syrup just like a lot of other acers.

So unbelievably dry around here for almost two months now. 14 day rainfall only about 10% of normal.
