Thank you all.  Hope to have even more next week

cannabinated... Keep an eye out on those logs.  I have a feeling there's goodness to be found just beyond the mulch as well.

I have to ask. How far do some of you drive to get to your hunting spots?

Well I just read that box elders grow naturally in ALL county's in Illinois. Now I have a river near me that hits another bigger river that hits the Ohio. Near me, where I am trying to hunt, there is well probably a couple thousand acres in a county forest preserve. The river loops around a couple wetlands, on is like 60 acres. There are a shit load of flood plains. I see so much of the same habitat that you guys post. There has got to be some here.

Mind providing me a habitat shot for SE Ohio? I went and spent 12+ hours looking this weekend in all my normal spots and only found 3 lil pins where I've found pounds before.

Herbtaylor posted a pretty good habitat photo as well but this is the gerneral look to most of my spots. Areas near creeks and lakes that have some decent tree coverage with lots of grass, other low creeping plants and lots of half buried piles of wood.

Excellent finds texturedsounds, those are gorgeous. I got back out last night with a buddy, found 200 grams fresh so pretty good haul overall. My buddy ended finding the biggest one we've found this season.

Once again, really nice finds to all those finding some!

What a tremendous day!  Earlier this week my partner and I was given the wonderful gift of being able to witness our first crazy mulch fruiting, courtesy of Koods.  Completely astonishing are the things Koods is working with in his area.  Even without the mulch his areas look perfect.  The county or state or whatever took a perfect flame and doused it with gas.  Not only were the fruitings something to see, but the actual fruits were like looking at a new species almost.  All in all a long, but wonderful, hike around the surrounding woods spotting ovoids.  I can't thank him enough for that.
Well the you know what came and it was time for us to hit up the spots we've known about for years.  Wasn't sure if much would be happening, but had a hunch things were starting at least.  Spent the night up in PA so I could easily get to the couple areas I needed to today.  Things turned out better than I thought they would after a quick look around yesterday afternoon.  Found a lot of young clusters and even more pins for next time.  Spent all day out and about (7am-7pm), but was totally worth it.  I can't wait to see what the season has everyone this year.  Should be good stuff all around.

Here's a good bit of what I was able to observe today.  A couple of PA pics came from yesterday afternoon.

from SE PA

:congrats:

love those pointy, nipply, long-stemmed PA fruits you've been posting for years.  we just don't get that pheno down here in VA it seems.  well done and sweet pics; thanks for sharing!

Alright alright, the fruiting is moving up its range and getting closer to my neck of the woods. Finally some PA finds, albeit SE PA...I would expect NY to be fruiting with in two weeks here....what do you guys think?

Seeing that people find these in NY gives me hope for southern Ontario. How far north are people finding these in NY?

I feel like the logs do better in those wide flood plains that soak up real well. Idk. Like I said I've never seen a log fruit like that. But most of what I look at are small creeks that concentrate debris.

Also, koods you were the default hand model. My arms were busy. Personally, I feel like my nails are prettier.

To my knowledge, ovoids have not been found in upstate NY...only the Eastern area. I would say that the chances of finding ovoids in Ontario are slim to nill unless you try introducing them.

ah, i thought you guys found those north of baltimore sometimes.  that helps delineate the range of that phenotype/variety.

congrats on your finds too, Thayendanegea; on the board now!

Ps: textured sounds has been mentioning box elder maples and i just wanted to say that last weekend i was being extra conscious about types of trees where i was making observations.  wouldn't you know that in the four spots i visited, some separated by miles and two of which were new to me, every time i took a pic of an ovoid i could touch a box elder with my walking stick if not just my outstretched arm.  i'd never noticed that but it was definitely true for my small sample size from last weekend.

Doesn't look good after looking at that map. I thought I had seen something here about finds near Cleveland. I'll have to get my hands on some spores to start spreading around. Plenty of natural area here that looks identical to the habitat shots you guys are posting. I'll be keeping my eyes out for them while I'm Morel hunting.

a bunch of us were talking the other day about seeing colonized corn cobs, walnuts, pine cones, etc. and i mentioned hickory nut hulls...here is an example.  I broke this one open to show the interior better, but they really love the hulls since they're usually just split with small 1/8" or 1/4" cracks in them and the inside gives a nice microclimate (I imagine).

Has anyone seen mold growing on ovoids? I've asked this before but I can't remember any affirmatives.

I've seen it just like that before, climbing up the stem. Only once though.

It clearly wasn't myc, slightly different texture and color.

:awesomenod:That is one nice looking ovoid you have there.  The temps must be getting better in your area.  I've always liked how as the nights get warmer, the ovoids get bigger.

Glad to see you started finding some.  Hopefully one day that phenotype will wash down river to your spots.  I've been working on getting them setup, just way further upriver from where I think you hunt. .. I finally stopped by, where I thought the Bmore ovoids fruit, late last spring.  Ended up only finding 4, but wasn't even sure at first because they looked so different.
