Didn't find any today, nor other signs of mushrooms. Perhaps in a couple of weeks they'll come around!

NJ has it's eyes out as well. I'd like be able to confirm it's existence in this state, it's only been found once here as far as I know. I think I'll actually go have a looksee right now.

You should look for Psilocybe graveolens in NJ.

Yea, I plan on looking for that as well, but as dishez has said before, the one place it was ever found, the meadowlands, is not a very hospitable place to be mucking around in. I'll definitely try though.
Just got back from a little trek, nothing yet. I looked in japanese knotweed infested river banks on washed up debris. All I found was some boletes.
Let's see who finds the first one.

I didn't get to go out today like I intended but when I overturned some leaves I found what appeared to be some galerinas. I need to get my camera charger.

In the last two years I haven't found them before April 25. This is in the Wheeling, WV area, a little north, a little south, east west, you get it. Peak of the season for me is always the second week of May. I would bet money that Sativa Skys finds the first Ovoids of the year! I'll post pics when I find some. I wont be checking til Friday as I am out of town.
These were the first of my season last year. April 30, Found in South east Ohio.

I live in NE Ohio and started looking for them the other day as well (complete novice) I was looking around small streams on my parents land....Am I doin' it right?
I could look around a few larger streems that are on public land around here but I can't see making a drive to the Ohio River to hunt for something I most likely won't find anyway.

I'd search near the largest river you can find. It doesn't have to be the ohio, but there has to be at least a medium sized one in your area. Look for one that has woody debris that's been there for a while. Also, supposedly they're commonly found in areas that are thick with japanese knotweed, a bamboo like invasive reed that is common on river beds.

I have never found them directly on the banks of the Ohio River. I find them on tributaries that flow into the Ohio, within a mile or so of the Ohio River.

10 to 50 feet on average. It really depends on where the woody debris is and the ground cover. Probably about 2 to 3 more weeks here in Ohio before they start poppin up though.

This year should be good as there has been no flooding. Which means that debris deposited last year and the year before have had time to colonize and fruit. If it floods too much it washes everything away and brings in new stuff. I learned the most by researching old posts from shroomydan. He was pretty much the authority on Ovoids. Read everything that he ever posted on bluefoots and or Ovoideocystidiata. The best advice I can give is get out and walk, walk and when you think you've walked enough, walk some more. I like hunting because I like to hike. You won't find them unless you are willing to get ticks, bees, and stinging nettles. I can't even tell you how many times I have plunged my hands into stinging nettles. Anyways Good luck! I will share as much knowledge about these mushies that I know!

I actually checked my patches about a week ago and found roughly 6 or 7 ovoids. It was pretty surprising because it is still early for these guys to be out. I've been finding them for a few years now, mainly due to knowledge gained from this site. I'm pretty good at identifying ovoids and distinguishing them from look-alikes, but I just wasn't 100% on these. I guess it was probably because there was not a trace of bluing, and because I only found a few mushrooms so early in the season. Anyway, I took a spore print to clear up any confusion and upon seeing a purple brown quickly gobbled them down. Great first trip of the season. We have had a little cold spell lately so I'm gonna wait a few weeks before going out again. I'm located in WV near the Ohio River (about 30 miles)
Happy Ovoid season!!

Yeah, my bad on not having pics to back up my find. I know how everyone here loves the myco-porn, but I don't have a camera right now. Wondering if anyone else in WV has spotted their first of the season?? My old posts from last year have some pretty cool ovoid pics, and hopefully next time I'll have a camera with me to snap off some pics. Anyone else notice that these mushrooms have a distinct smell to them. I often use this characteristic for reference when picking ovoids. I can't really describe the smell of them, but once you have some confirmed ovoids take a nice wiff of them or compare them to other mushrooms and you will understand what I'm talking about. Almost a sweet smell, but not really....Anyways I hope all of you have a bountiful harvest.
Oh yeah, I was also wondering about peeps from the W****ing/Wi**ton, WV area. I used to go picking up there, but in recent years the authorities have been really cracking down on mushroom pickers. I often consider this area to be the home of the ovoids (in WV atleast). Just curious if people are still having success in these areas or if the cops have that place pegged.

I always wonder how cops or park rangers get to know if there's psychedelic fungi in an area. They're not mycologists, and unless they're super uptight I don't see why they would care about that sort of stuff. Or even how they would catch someone doing that. Unless they like stake out known spots, as if they don't have anything else to fill their time up with.

I did ALOT of picking in that area last season. By alot I mean damn near everyday I went hunting as I was in the Pburgh area. Never once had a problem with a copper. I always had a story on hand though just in case I was questioned. It's all about being prepared to tell them what they want to hear and bullshit your way out of any suspicion. I usually would find morels the same time I would find ovoids, so I would have them on me and have a stash pile of the ovoids until the coast was clear to get them to the vehicle.

A while back, MJ posted this, but had to remove the location (xxxx xxxxx xxxx xxxxxx). Does anyone know this location? Would anyone be so inclined to PM me the location? It interests me, as I an from PA. However, I have a suspicion that the location is probably far from where I live, rendering it near impossible to actually visit. I considered purchasing the article, but at 30ish dollars, it's a bit much. Thanks.
INTRODUCTION Through several explorations in a xxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxx xxxx in the United States since the spring of 2003 made by one of the authors (Gaines), we found a blueing Psilocybe that is herein described as a new species.

The cops made about 80 busts in one day in wheeling a couple years back. There is an article on MJ's site (or atleast there used to be) telling about this. The cops were staking out known picking locations and stopping people as they were walking out of the woods. I believe the majority of the arrests were for trespassing as these spots were on Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Company land. I think they ended up searching a few people and found weed on them also. I'm sure it is safe as long as you aren't stupid about it, and as boomers said it's probly a good idea to have some morels on you and a story ready just in case(especially if hunting in these areas). Good to know these spots are still crankin' em out.
