Just looked up pics from last year.  My first finds were on April 12.  Still nothing up yet.  The veg is starting to pop up.  It won't be long.

Can someone here let us know when the rivers are flooding? Dont wanna make the 3 hour road trip just to get to my spot being flooded.

Hey Dubspore,
Check this link for river info.

https://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/rt

As a paddler I rely on these river gauges.  Click on a state, every dot is an individual site with data over a 30 year period.  They update anywhere from every 15 minutes to 4hrs.  You kind of have to know where your river lies on the map though.
Tip: on a PC or laptop you can hover the cursor over the dot to peek at basic info.

looking like i'll get a couple weeks of limited hunting this spring and then will sit the bench during the peak season...my surgeon wants to move a planned september surgery to april 26th and i won't be able to walk off-trail for around three months thereafter.  if this goes down i'm gonna miss chanterelle/summer edible season too.  fucking hell.  maybe the cultivated beds will flush at least a little bit.

sorry for the whiny off topic post.  wishing good luck and giant clusters to all of you.  i'll be here hunting vicariously through y'all so post those pics, everybody.

Relic-I'm sorry about the bad news brother.

Wishing you the best!  :jah:

i've saw this link posted before for sure, and that ovoids generally fruit when the ground has been consistent 50-55F
http://www.greencastonline.com/tools/soil-temperature

but has anyone monitored the moisture map while ovoids are fruiting?
http://www.greencastonline.com/tools/soil-moisture

maybe not really needed, could always just go out during the right time and look, but with these maps it seems almost as if you could pinpoint when they would be fruiting. or atleast get a good idea of when they are fruiting

That sucks. However probably wise to take it before it eventually gets worse.
Losing one season to get well beats potentially losing several later on.

Fingers crossed for your wellbeing, upcoming surgery and the following recovery!

Got out and scouted out some new spots again.  I found about a quarter mile of some of the best looking natural habitat that I've seen. Still nothing up.  The 10 day forecast looks great.

I've planned to hit my spot on Wednesday afternoon. Hopefully that will be enough time for some heads to pop up

Just monitor the stilt grass, when it's about an inch long, the ovoids will start popping.

My experience:

Shade matters! Although, not 100 percent the determining factor but deeply shaded riverbed forest is my current preferred spot.

I think the decision wether or not to search the whole floodplain depends on the size of the stream. Places that flood once or twice per year for a day or two seem to potentially produce where where I hunt. The places that flood 6 times per year and are underwater for many days do not seem to work out.

That said not all "perfect places" cooperate, there are some serious random unexplained effects involved. You know just like morels, 10 spots look good, but 1 or 2 produce. Same story here.

Good luck.

Nice, I got some HUGE flood plains that only flood a couple times a year and are drying out within a day or 2. Has a big ass marshland made for waterfoul. I hope to find and be able to confirm their existance in illinois.

I think areas that flood every few years is best. That being said, i didn't have problems finding them in areas that had been under two feet of rapidly flowing flood waters two weeks earlier.

May 2nd

Same area May 4th. Ground had been stripped of vegetation and debris.

Same area May 18th
