were these pine chips located in a floodplain?

No they were just piled up in the woods.  It is not far from a swampy area.  I put stem butts in there 2 years ago and a handful of shredded hardwood mulch around the butts to give them something to eat until the pine rotted down a bit.  At the time of planting them there the pine was green and sappy.  I figured it was going to fail.

Hey but it didnt :super:  I've never seen them fruit on pine. Good luck this season and on your projects.

I have heard about a find in southern Indiana and rumors of one in southern Illinois. I am in middle of Illinois roughly, maybe just above. There is some great flood plains around a large creek/small river that has SOOOOO many mushrooms in the fall. Don't know what most of them were, lol, but I found so many species when trying to hunt a fall ovoid. This spring will be my 1st time hunting in the spring, as I just learned about these little guys this past fall.

I do have some areas that are like wetlands along the river, it floods once in a  great while, but its low and hold moisture in pockets, so I am hopeful. Anyone recommend any types of trees they tend to be around, any oaks, maple, hickory, any thing?

They grow, across the river from Paducah Kentucky,in Metropolis Illinois, and Stewart Nelson Park in Paducah is full of them!
Try around hole 6,and along the disc golf trails in the woodchips ;-)

There's not another shallower crossing?  You had said "you used 2 wrk there, but it's been closed down since it flooded 10 yrs bk"  What about the road going into it or is that not a safe route?

Yeah there's a few ways to get to it.  There's a shallower spot downstream but I would be exposing myself walking across an open field next to the road. I could just park at the mill but the owner lives right beside it pretty much. The way that I'm planning on going gets me in there through the back undetected. In and out unseen.  People around here shoot first and ask questions later lol.

Keeping up with all this since I'm in Southwest PA now. So psyched! I never did much hunting for actives in CA since they grew in urban areas on woodchips and I'm more keen on staying out in the woods.

Posting to follow the thread. It's been like 3 years since I've even attempted to look for ovoids.

I'm in NJ, but the closest spot I know of that looks promising is over in PA. Hopefully I find time on a weekend to go hunting.

After the snow I think it would be wise to wait another week or two.

Cheers mates, here's to an early and fruitful season.

Also, since it has been quite a while since I've gone hunting, can somebody with some experience provide some links to some resources they suggest reading up on as far as habitat, weather timing, and any other pertinent information?

Quick question, I think a guy asked this earlier, but what's the minimal temperature at night oviods can withstand? Like if the afternoon is 75 and the night is 40, will they die? Just a little question, didn't want to make a whole thread.

Sweet, I got a stretch of 60's in the day with rain showers, and 40's at night. Can't wait to hit the woods soon!

Yeah I've got about a 4 or 5 day stretch of ideal weather here too with some rain in the middle. I'm thinking Tuesday or Wednesday I will hit the spots, not really expecting to find much.

I base whether the season is in swing off of what koods finds.

Tuesday is my shot as well. I really am looking for a needle in a hay stack hunting eastern Central Illinois. I have 3 days of rain, 1st day thunder storms, and 2 days of showers. So I hope to at least find some fungi of any type Tuesday, but would rather find a little brown mushroom that bruises blue to take a print from and ID.
