The problem areas for me where there were once tons of ovoids got drowned by floodwaters that stayed around for 4-5 days...I think it drowned the mycellium and also buried areas with sand...sometime a couple feet of it.
That's why I think the smaller streams that flood and then go down within a day or two (like Koods finds) are pretty much immune to the flooding because of the rapid drainage of the flood waters.
As far as shade goes....I have never found them in an open field...they are always in partially shaded areas...usually around sycamores or box elder wind falls or other hardwoods.

Nice there's some sycamors, hickory, oak, and walnut out there for sure. Not sure if there's any box elders growing out there. I tried to find some of those last fall as I have read about ppls finds around the box elders.

something to look at while waiting –Glanced at the '09 & '10 seasons and they had me drooling so thought I'd mention them. Dickenz07 and psychedelicSLUG dominated those years starting 4/22 in WVa and 4/25 in NJ respectively. 2009 is only 3 pages and with page 1 alone of 2010 provides a perspective on the "many faces of ovoids" and habitat shots worth a look if you're new to the topic.

They definitely would love to eat right through sterile popcorn, but I'm just waiting for things to pop off. I suspect its still going to be at least 10 days. Everything is still recovering from the cold.

Ground vegetation needs to get going. The forcast looks good for the next two weeks. I concur, ten days is a good target.

People have been finding morels around here. Thats usually an indicator that there's a few ovoids up. I figured somebody would have found a few by now. Springtime weather has came early.

I'm gonna go check out a spot for wine caps when it stops raining. That should be a good indication of where we are.

were the chanterelles fresh? they're awfully good when fresh so it's hard to say you'll like anything else if you didn't like them.
imo, wine caps are great. Polyporus squamosus can be good if prepared correctly...treat them like something that tastes like cucumber and you might like them. stir fried with other vegetables, oyster sauce, and a good quality soy sauce is a decent meal. they're pretty good pickled, too.

I'm feeling very hopeful for tomorrow. A friend and I are hitting southwest Pennsylvania spots. Will report back with how the habitat is looking, and hopefully some nice finds.
It's been very wet here the past week. Lots of rain today, too. Tomorrow's forecast is perfect weather. I'll be going in the afternoon until sunset, so they'll have all day to grow as well. Hopefully that will be enough time for me to spot some.
