so first i heard something crashing through the woods up ahead of me...figured i jumped a herd of deer.  then i saw this:



and then noticed this on a log that produces ovoids:



and the other end of that log was torn apart, revealing this blue wood:




i suspected there was a bear in those woods because of how torn up one of my spots was last year; the logs were thrown around and torn apart as the bear presumably looked for grubs.  now there is no doubt a local bear is fuckin with my ovoid logs.

most of the time i just carry a big knife.

the bears around here are pussies unless you get between momma and a cub...i don't plan on getting between a momma and a cub.

Holy crap im glad i don't have to worry about bears!!

Springtime is cub time too...id rethink that sidearm if i were you...be safe out there brotha!!

I always carry my .45 when in the woods, we have some big pigs, black bears and coyotes. After being treed by a coyote, I will never be unarmed in the woods again.

hogs would worry me more than the bears and coyotes around here.  i've chased both of those species off before but pigs tend to just charge.

fortunately wild hogs are just starting to invade this far north. won't be too long before they're tearing up crops and whatnot in an obvious fashion.

I have 2 tell you a story from last year...

  I was pulled off on the side of a gravel road bk in the mountains where i've had luck finding Honey mushrooms.  Beautiful day, I could clearly see my truck not 15' away when all of a sudden I hear a hard blow.  I thought, "What is a deer blowing at me 4?"  When I looked up, not even 10' away was about a 350-400 lb black bear.

  He had his nose in the air sniffing & I guess he didn't like my smell.  As I sucked in a large breath, my survival instincts kicked in & said "ACT LARGER THAN THE BEAR!"  So I took that breath & as I rose up, I started flailing my arms & yelling towards the bear.  He was like - WTF?  Pounced bk 2x's & took off.  I backed all the way to my truck, got in, shaking like a leaf, started my truck & realized - I peed a little.

Peteboy - I'm not sure where u live BUT you should be careful, COYWOLVES are becoming a problem around here.  They are coyotes/red-wolves mix that are currently populating the E. Coast.

My husbands co-wrkr (Jeff) was heading home from hunting Morels last yr on the W. VA side of the Valley & noticed a coyote about 50 yards up the path he was on.  Jeff continued walking watching the coyote as he would dart ahead then stop, almost waiting for him to catch up to a certain point, then take off.

As this continued, Jeff noticed he was being flanked.  1st on his left then 2 on his right.  He kept calm & unlatched his holster, that's when he heard/saw the 2 large 1's about 30 yards behind him.  Jeff pulled his gun & fired in the air.  They took off but it wasn't soon before he heard them again.  Thank God he was closer 2 his truck the 2nd time.  He said "I reloaded & fired again, got 2 my truck & got the HELL out of there!"

Wait Wut? Where are the wolves coming from?  Coywolves are in Toronto, and Minnesota. Never hear
Of them existing so far from a wolf population.

Edit: I guess they are ok West Virginia. I saw a documentary about coywolves living in downtown Toronto. They seem pretty harmless.

They are trying to re-establish Red wolves in the wild here in Va.  The problem is just like in Toranto they are breeding w/ the coyotes.  A buddy of mine traps wild animals for a living.  He has pics of the these Coywolves beside Coyotes 4 size comparison.  They're big.  http://www.c-ville.com/coywolves-albemarle-county-new-species-calls-area-home/#.WPUFm_nyvZ4

all coyotes in the east have wolf dna in them and that's why they're larger than their scrawny western cousins.  this is nothing new.  we've just always called them coyotes and never cared about their dna :shrug:

I know that all coyotes have some dna of wolf in them but the wolf part is becoming more predominant, hence the hunting in packs.  That's my take on it anyway.  Also, I tried finding that pic of the comparison between the 2 but had no luck.  Found this 1 tho..

they're just eastern coyotes, nothing more.  (and no, the wolf DNA is not increasing; it was introduced about 100 years ago and has been there ever since).

I found a new spot that has huge potential....It's a stream restoration with wood chip covered in-roads....about a mile of it.
Didn't find a single ovoid but certainly found some prime seeding areas. When these ovoids finally do start fruiting in my other spots....This is where the stem butts will go.:mushroom2:
