Found two dry ovoids in a totally new area. I think here in central VA things are slowing down until we get more rain.  I'm stoked for finding a new spot. That's 9 producing areas so far!

The river/large stream I hunt on.

And the habitat.

Just to help some people out.

So how far from the river are you?

The forest stretches out no more than 300ft from the river then turns into a bike path. Then more forest on the other side of the bike path. I've never found any in the forest on the opposite side of the bike path because it begins to slant upwards. (Steep hill) The side where the river is has this basically 10 foot drop in then a good half mile of flood zone that I hunt. Then the river is roughly another 8 ft below you. The spot has multiple smaller streams/run offs that flood every season then dry up. The ovoids tend to be on the islands in between these natural drainage ditches, roughly 200ft from the river. I never find many close to the river. Idk hope this helps some people.

From my experience, they grow in the highest quantities in the spots where 99% of people would say, "Fuck that! No way I'm walking through that."

I just get a stick and constantly move weeds, ticks, and spiders out of my way and constantly look at the ground moving weeds out of the way to get a better look at the ground.

Good luck out there all of ya'll new comers and veterans.

Great description. :mushroom2: My find was also on an island of sorts, bordered by some runoff areas that had recently flooded. Technically, more of a peninsula than an island.

Nice new finds guys. So are wine caps a pretty good ovoid indicator? Hell, wine caps sound like a great find in their own right.

Appreciating the habitat photos.
Not much greenery in the few spots I've surveyed.
Not as barren as psyche dels desert shots though!
Dubs is that habitat photo a current one?

An area I checked recently was flush with Entoloma (credit ghostydocs ID)

Do these share a habitat similar to ovoids?

Nice looking pics to those able to post shots.  It's still not quite time yet here in N MD.  Thought it would be an early season, but now everything is looking on schedule. After finding some last week, looking around here seemed a bust so we decided to head back south to VA for a couple days.  Ended up hiking around for 6 hrs yesterday, getting a better idea of distribution, but it took us way longer than expected to get back to Bmore (wanted to post last night).  All I have to say is DC traffic can suck it!  It ended up being a really good day though.  Found some more on the same logs we left pins on and was able to get a better idea of distribution.  Ventured further into the forest and stumbled upon this area which had nothing but box elder and not as much tall grass.  Basically it looked absolutely perfect!  Came across a bunch of logs that look primed and just waiting for more moisture and a half dozen logs that had semi-dried fruits.  I'll agree that the wind definitely messed up what could of been a really nice 1st flush.

I'm really amazed at how different the VA ovoids look from the PA ones.  We were finding lots of stout stems with wavy caps in VA, whereas in PA the stems seem to be longer and the nipples pointier.  May have to do with the lows in winter?  Maybe the difference in central and northern Appalachia origins? Anyhow, here's a couple shots of the ovoids we observed.  All were growing from box elder logs or from the ground around logs.  In the last pic there was a pluteus growing among the ovoids.  Further examination revealed it was coming from a stick that ran underneath the log.

Thnx and nice finds with those ramps.  Would be nice to find some of those along with morels.  ...  Yeah, that crap is a pain to look thru!  The knotweed doesn't help out any either.  Was hoping to at least see some pin shots from you when we got back last night.  Best of luck when you do go back out.  I'm debating on whether or not to even look until we get the unspoken "r word".  Maybe some luck from ground specimens, but the dry air is messing us up.  We could at least use some nice foggy mornings to help things out.

gonna try my hand at this tommorow or the next day after the rainy-ness goes away and the warmth comes back.

Pittsburgh-ish area, going to try some streams that branch off directly from the Ohio River. Wish me luck!
