Nice early start Stevo & Koods & nice finds Virginia people -  You're already making it look like the east coast season is in full swing -  I think we still have a little ways further north but potentially earlier than usual and see what happens next week. FWIW  The soil temps the Pittsburgh area appears to be warming up already  and was early based on my past experience however I won't be out that way this season so feel free to PM if you're in the neighborhood and want a tip
Happy hunting!

Check the second photo for bruising. Looks like pholiotina from that angle.

It's a funny pic but it bruised just fine.

Went out this morning to my regular spot and found nothing.  Decided to check a completely new spot I've been scouting while hunting deer this season and boom. Found a new patch.  Still nothing from my main spot. May be resting this year. Also found one single morel. Funny thing about that morel is that i took the photo and didn't realize that the ovoid patch was actually in the background of the photo. LOL.
;Edit;
Hey TexturedSounds, Im hunting all over the James as well. What area are you close to?

Those look meaty!! Glad someone found a morel today, because we sure didn't.

I'm actually in MD.  We went down for a couple days but didn't stay tonight and just came back.  The area we checked out was almost an hr west of Richmond.

That's pretty close to me. So I guess i need to explore more around the James. Were you on the James direct or a stream feeding it?

Yeah, check out the area a lil more now that things are starting up.  I can't give out specifics of location (in case we wanna go back this season) but I will at least let you in on this. ... Having collected in MD, PA(east and west),OH, and now VA, natural east coast ovoids can be found along any major river and along tributaries that flow into those rivers.  The key is walking among the Box Elders. :wink:

Yeah I think I remember.  Is there any public land around huntington that's good for shrooms?  Its all private land here.  There's a ton of spots that look awesome but I'm afraid of getting caught trespassing.

Also they really like walnut trees.  Walnuts are easy to identify.  If you see a stand of walnuts, check em. I look for box elder and walnuts when I hunt.

Hey dickenz07, yea man I remember talking with you some last year. Have you had any luck yet? I've been out a handful of times to a few of my spots with no luck until yesterday. Seems like this last bit of rain we've gotten was just what we've needed.

I haven't hunted NJ ever, this will be my first hunt for actives here.  My last active hunt was Oak Harbor,  WA.  That was back in 2008! Being that i dont want to be jumping fences at farms, looking for lib caps, i will be focusing on Ovoids.I'm surrounded by creeks,  and I live right on the Delaware River.  I should be good to go when it warms up a little more out here.  I will definitely be using that nice tip to search on Google Earth for flat bends in local creeks.  I'm getting crazy impatient to get out there with all of this rain, but it's probably still too cold over night.

I bet hunting in the PNW was a blast, definitely a goal of mine. Yea google earth can definitely be your friend. I'd say you guys are still a little ways off that far north but it's definitely about here. I feel you on getting impatient though, we've been out a couple times, granted we hike a lot, knowing that we wouldn't have any luck.

Thanks,  and yes.  The PNW was amazing!  I used to go backpacking and day hiking CONSTANTLY!  Now I have a wide,  a 2 year old, and a 4 month old.  Not very easy anymore!

Man I would have as well, my wife used to live in Tacoma and talks about how awesome it is out there. I've got a 2 year old so I know how difficult it can be to get out. That quick 2 hour hike comes with an hour of packing and getting the baby ready to go. We've tried to have my little one in the woods as much as possible though, I hate being inside for too long if the weather is nice.

Yeah,  my 2 year old goes on my back lol.  He actually spots mushrooms sometimes!  Of course is usually just plain bracket fungus.  Once he saw an oyster cluster that I missed though.
