They were growing from the log and from the clay soil around it, presumably from buried wood.

Hmmm. Reminds me of this log I found last year. Yours look more like galerina to me too though.. You will notice the annulus ring on these little guys is blue in the last pic. They also started to show obvious bruising. Proceed with caution. I think yours are Galerina

This is fucking amaze balls!  I would go out and gather a shirt load of rotting oak and make a big pile.  Throw that log on top and do everything you can to promote the mycelium to take hold in the whole pile.

Well, they don't usually fruit out of logs. They're more likely to if the log is buried. Galerinas are more likely to fruit out of logs.
