Southern Ohio

Does anyone know the prevalence of ovoids in Northeast Ohio?

Too far north

there's posts in certain fb groups that would suggest you're wrong

theres even a NE Ohio find on MO man, from like last year iirc

i know it's hearsay or whatever since i don't know how to go back and actually find the posts from facebook but there have been finds in new philadelphia ohio which maybe a little more central ohio but its pretty north, as well as around the youngstown area which is more NE than the post from MO

i have spoke to someone who claims to have hunted near the Cleveland area with success on more than one occasion

I seen some of those dryads today too. Wonder how long they take to mature? No ovoids yet.

I just looked up my first finds from last year and they were bone dry half grown. Also the date was April 20th. Hehe. Looks like I'm starting this week.

Even knowing this, I thought i'd venture 2 my spots & just have a look see...
THE UNTHINKABLE HAPPEN
http://

THIS TREE FELL RIGHT ON TOP OF MY SPOT... WTF?

RIGHT of the fallen tree was a wall/dam of debris. Tricky 2 navigate & a deterrence to others insuring me that it would be safe from traffic.

LEFT which is clear now, will be overgrown by May.

That sucks.  Maybe that will make you go search and find an even bigger patch lol.  I had a spot a few miles down the road I picked about an ounce out of.  Fourwheelers tore it up over the summer.  Its destroyed.

Yeah I was expecting it to happen eventually because its like a little creek bottom where people have always rode dirtbikes and fourwheelers.  There's mud holes and hills to climb.  I used to tear it up when I was a kid too lol.  It wasn't just some random spot where somebody came through.  Its a known riding spot.  I wasn't surprised when I seen it.

Took me 3-YEARS 2 find that spot LAST YEAR & it was found at the END of the season.  Don't get me wrong, I do LOVE the hunt & i'm definitely NOT giving up.  It's just this is how my luck roles 89% of the time which I should be used 2 by now.

You think there's any chance they would come up around it? If you had a chainsaw or could borrow one maybe cut it up and move it.

No, you wouldn't.  Don't bring violence into mushroom hunting.  If you're any good at it, you're finding new patches every year.

I wouldn't get too overly excited about a spot. Spots usually only produce well one year unless it has been restocked with good mulchy debris

I peeked at a couple if my smaller spots lady week and one of them was dozed over.  Disappointing but noir surprising.  It appears to be an older mulch dump for a public rose garden. I grabbed a total of maybe a quarter, dried last spring.  The other spot i checked looks like it's gonna be a lot better than last year. There's tons of mycelium everywhere. Happy hunting and good luck to all hunters!

Checked on my old patches, well below water line, years later.

I'm bouncing around on either side of a river, finding one side to have much more plentiful fungi growth in general.  Facinating:strokebeard:

NOT EVEN POSSIBLE  The land it's on is 1 of the towns parks which also has a Natural National Landmark.

Besides... that tree is so huge in diameter it's unbelievable, you could fit a Honda Civic inside the base/lower trunk.

As far as them surviving = YES              Getting 2 them = NO

1st pic, left-tree - was the back support 4 the wall/damn of debris (2nd pic) Combined w/ the overgrowth it made a perfect canopy for the Ovoids.  The new canopy (1st pic the curve in the trunk) made by this fallen galiath, is impenetrable. The space beneath - GREAT 4 the Ovoids BUT blocked by debris wall on right side & debris + thistle, overgrowth, vines, etc on left.

That's kind of discouraging Koods:frown:.  The 1st 1 I EVER found was on a trail leading 2 that spot.  Prior 2 that, I had searched up/down that river in several locations w/ NO-LUCK.

Even checking the towns brush disposal area which they turn n/2 mulch several x's turned up nothing.:mad2:

Get on google earth zoom in on the creeks in your area and follow them.  Look for flat spots and where the creeks bend.

Hello there fellow Ovoid hunters. I have such a warm fuzzy feeling about this thread. I have only been in the ovoid game for three years now and really felt alone in this. Not a lot of people around here know what the hell I'm talking about. I have only ever tripped on ovoids and they are the only active i have ever found.  Anyway, Im stoked to now be apart of the bigger conversation and contribute what i can.
That being said here are my observations in central VA just south of Charlottesville along a creek feeding the James River.
Yesterday a buddy of mine picked about a dozen that were in an area that gets direct flooding from the James. All other spots have not produced anything and seem too dry. We are getting some scattered thunderstorms right now and i will be checking everyday after work. Thanks for all your hard work and generosity of information.  As i said before, i am completely stoked right now to finally have found this thread.  Happy hunting.

If you found them anywhere, there are more spots you just have to find them. Every year I find new spots. It's not that hard.
