I put them beside a fan for an hour.  Once they dry out a little bit its alot easier to see the blueing.  If they don't blue I throw em out. I don't care if I have 5000 mushrooms I'll pick each and every one up and check them again. I'm still a noob at hunting ovoids.  I grew cubes forever before I learned of the ovoids being in my area.  Always heard about shrooms being around but I had no idea they would come up in the masses like they do.

I don't know.  I think JayBob might have an ovoid.  It's just not fresh and looks like a it's sunbleached.  I've found them like that.

The stem looks right. It came up with the myc root ball (for lack of a better term).  Gills look right.  Has the nipple on cap.  It's bruising.  Found in VA I assume and appropriate habitat..again assumed.

In VA we've had really weird weather over the past month.  Very warm temps for March but not slot of precipitation.  I wouldn't be surprised if it was just an early friut that's dried out.

I'm certainly no TI and koods has probably forgotten more about ovoids than I know, but I'm on the side it's an ovoid.

With the rain we are supposed to get tomorrow I'm going to do my best to get out over the weekend and see what's popping up.

Yes to all your assumptions. Central VA by the James on wood slash amongst stilt grass and ivy looking stuff. Unfortunately I was called away from my hike and by the time I got home it was dry beyond printing or at least wouldn't drop any for me. It did bruise a lot more after the pics I took tho. Pretty sure it was but I'll be hitting that spot up again later this weekend after the rain.

They can be deceiving for sure.  Could also be where I haven't seen an ovoid for a year too haha. And thats the only pic I have of the corncob ovoids.  The stem looked way whiter in that pic than what they really were, shitty camera. I hope to find some more cobvoids again this year.  I also found a few that were fruiting off old buried walnuts last year.

When in doubt, use your sense of smell...your nose knows. Ovoids have that dubious odor...I love so much. lol

They smell too similar to Galerinas though in my experience.

Galerinas are definitely a look alike but for me its pretty easy to ID them.  The agrocybes are probably the closest look alike to ovoids.

Not to me....galerinas smell like mushrooms....ovoids smell like dog piss....or something like that.:mushroom2:

One thing I've noticed in pictures of galerina is that the stem widens toward the cap. I think that's a pretty safe distinction to make, no?

Probably not.  Color is a big thing with galerinas.  Best way is to go out and find some and get a good feel for what they look like.  Also they tend to grow out of logs.  Not always tho. Koods has a good pic a couple pages back where you can see the little orange specks in the stem.

I'm getting so hype for this season. Back in 2014 I didn't have much luck and I kind of gave up on it and/or was too busy to go hunting. I really think this is going to be the year. I have the means (transportation) and also other friends to help me.

Hopefully by April 15th I'll have made some good finds.

So that means the noob found the first fully developed ovoid on the thread lol (assuming that's an ovoid). No offense jaybob I'm a noob too.

This one? Pretty sure it an agrocybe. Can't really explain the blue, but that looks nothing like a ovoid.

Whats up everyone!? The season should be jumping soon. Im in a new area this year, so I'm not sure what to expect, but I look forward to the challenge!  Good luck to all. Happy Hunting!

Jaybobs mushrooom in question kinda Reminds me of this single mushroom I found a couple years back in SW VA. Wasn't sure at the time if this was an ovoid either.

Jaybobs looks like a super dry ovoid that never dropped spores. More pictures would be helpful.

A lotta bruising on this lil guy but I'm still a novice....can someone tell me if I'm on the board? Its pretty mangled and the only one I could find in the area oddly enough

did you use your fingernail or something to score the cap to get it to show bruising like that?  can we see some updated pics now that it has aged a little?

it does look like it might have rusty brown spores when zooming in and looking at it in which case i'd be wrong and koods would be right (which is not surprising).

i found a pic of a not-an-ovoid that i collected last year which has a stipe like yours, but my find didn't show bruising like that.

It looks weird to me.  I'm gonna stay out of it.  When I get a weird one like that I throw them out if they don't show good blue.  The cracking on the cap is odd looking, and the stem color is off a little bit but the blue looks right there's just not enough of it.  So idk I'm not an expert either.  Wish we had another pic after it dried a little bit more.

As requested. Roughly 36hrs from picking its blued pretty good. I've only ever found 1 before thanks to balances guidance so I don't know the smell to well sadly.  We did get pounded today w rain tho so I'm headed back to that spot tmo. We'll see of there's any brothers and sisters popping.

No offense taken. Last year was my first year hunting. Everybody is new at some point
