Stevo - don't know of anyone being bit  but caught one once  and not something I'd want to be bitten by.

Other than that a few pretty ones

And then there are these that are pretty wet, not bluing readily pending further eval

Guess it's not over till it's over...

funkmaster89, Sweet corncob find!  I keep hoping to find ovoids on something odd like that.

mushnerd, Absolutely beautiful pics. :awesomenod:  You guys had a really nice cold front that seems to have helped out a bunch.

gman, Glad to see your still finding some.  Things have pretty much shut down around me.  If there's anything coming up, it's probably hiding under all the tall veg.  May try and look in a different area tomorrow, but today was only a day filled with hiking.

stevo, I'd be a lil creeped out by schools of gar as well.  Never seen them school up, but have seen one before and it didn't look like something I'd want to let nibble on me.  .. Are you spreading your patch around to areas along rivers or do you just maintain what you have going on?  I haven't had the chance to look around on the ES (I think your on that side) but hope to check out some of my old stomping grounds one day.  Would be really cool if they are on the creeks and rivers I grew up around.  Either way, really good work and I always enjoy the pics from your projects. :super:

Just wondering.  Has anyone heard of anyone ever being bit by a gar?  They're pretty shy.  But in shallow water sometimes big schools of them will run by your feet and it gives me the creeps lol.  Less ticks walking through the creek though.

no but i had a stringer of six or seven fat crappie get (mostly) eaten by one before.  i walked to another cove, got on some good fish, and came back about two hours later to a stringer full of fish heads.  he left me a couple whole ones for dinner, though.

gman:  good to see you're still on em!  they've really blown their spore loads and the bugs have had a go at em, but i'd surely eat them!

I had a small gar or a needlefish get stuck in a fishing net once, the kind you toss.
Had to kill it because there was no chance in hell I was untangling those teeth with it alive.
Tried to preserve that awesome jaw, but it got eaten or just fell apart

I would have figured that was a snapping turtle that took your fish.  I tried so many times to get these things to bite every bait I could and it seems the only way i could catch them is accidentally snagging them.  Someone told me they like to eat lillies.

thinking back, i was in pike & chain pickerel territory, in a reservoir, and never saw snappers there in the 20 years i fished it regularly...almost certain not a gar and could be snapper, but prolly a pike as the water drops to 25+ feet deep in only the first ten feet from the shore and i've caught them there before.

that was a duh moment when i read the posts again and even though i saw gar ten times i kept thinking pike in my head.

TexturedSounds, Gar won't bother you, the river I live on has gar 6' long and 130 pounds, they've never attacked anyone. The only way one may bite you,  is if you catch it and get to close to the mouth or your wearing shinny  jewelry while swimming and it mistakes you for a fish; never heard of that  happening.

Nice looking finds stevo!!  Love the look of those meaty ones with the wavy margin and cap that never opens up.

Found a couple the other day, but nothing as pretty as those.  :super:

It was actually stevo that asked about the gar.  I was just saying how they don't look like something I'd want biting me.  Sounds like you have some big ones down your way.  The one I saw was only like a foot long.  They're intimidating looking with those teeth, either way.

Thayen- They were from a spot that is producing chubby ones consistently this season. I thought  it was thick mulch = thick mushroom but the one below was from a somewhat sparse layer of chips a few weeks ago so I'm not sure why. I'm optimistic for a few more - perhaps tonight or tomorrow -

Relic - they actually cleaned up pretty well.  some of the older ones didn't blue so I printed them and they had a surprisingly heavy load though I wouldn't call it  blowing a load like the stinkhorn below.
Have a good summer,
G

gman, I dont see how you can be in the same room with that stink horn, I can't stand to be around them long in the wild, much less bring them home with me.

The patches that just barely fruited, like missed the first and second flush because they were not fully colonized seem to hang on the longest. I find a few still producing little batches even this late.

Looking good everyone. Season in my area has been over for about a month now. The natural season in my neck of the woods seems to be getting progressively shorter each year I've been here. We got a lot of days in the high 80's pretty early and 90's at the end of may. Still a decent overall season considering I am not driving at the moment. I'll try and throw up some shots but I lost my good phone right before I went to the hospital at the end of march. Not a good year to be phishphan so far...
