Jehova's Witness?
    #15314958 -

Whats up shroomery,

I've been dating a girl who has Jehova's Witness grandparents and because she lived with them when she was younger, I go over to their house often and know they're Jehova's Witnesses and grandma's husband, not her grandpa, is an Elder (?).  anyways, i've heard all sorts of bad things and people making fun of this religion, so my question is can anyone give me jehova's witness in a nutshell?  i'm  not religious and don't consider myself an atheist/agnostic either. i'm definitely not looking to convert into religion at all so don't think i am.  i've heard things like they consider themselves christians but christians follow the bible word for word, and jehova's witnesses don't.  for example, they believe michael the archangel was jesus (?) correct me if i'm wrong.  anyways, i just wanted to get educated by someone likeminded.  :stoned:

I had a good friend in secondary school who's family were Jehovah's witnessess, people would make fun of him sometimes but he didn't let it bother him. He is one of the few friends I have had in my life with whome I could talk about Shroomery-esque subjects daily.

I learned from him that his faith deny Christmas as Jesus's birth date, and instead point to sometime in September I think. He also said that Jesus's was crucified on a tree, but I have also heard that they claim it was an x rather than a +. He loved Star trek, submarines and science.

No, not that I was ever aware of. I had the opinion that it was an offshoot of Christianity, and maybe without a lot of the BS inserted to aid control, but being a minority, others will always poke fun at them.

My mom is one, she said that their view on "heaven" is that earth has the potential to be "heaven". That when judgement day comes he will send the sinners to hell and let the holy stay on earth. God will then rid the earth of sickness and death, man and animal will live together in harmony. We will be able to communicate with animals and pretty much complete peace on earth, the dead will rise and live with the living. I would also like to add that I am agnostic, not a Jehovah Witness. I'm sorry i couldn't give you much on them but it's what I know.

On the bright side, they aren't against the use of natural products aka Marijuana, Mushrooms, MDMA, and so on. Of course this is what my mom and her church preaches, each church is different from the other. Which is the reason of my religion choice, it is all too corrupt for me to get my head around the truth.

Hope this helped.

LegitStupidity,

Yeah it did thank you.  But what i'm still confused about is how they consider themselves christians, i was told this by my girlfriend. i asked her how they can do that if they don't follow the bible verbatim.  she said they're the only ones that do... but wtf how can that be correct.  what you just said about your mother's views isn't christian.  where does it say that in the bible?  my girlfriend also said they don't believe in hell, hell is a term used to describe death, or in the grave.  she said they believe those who god approves of will go to heaven, and i said well why does john 3:16 say "..believe in me and have everlasting life"?  she said yeah but it doesn't say that will be in heaven, key word is just everlasting life.  but then jehova's witnesses believe evil will be destroyed, not sent to hell.  so that doesn't make sense to me.  in my opinion, it's not christian at all.  once i hear a religion or christian wanabe religion says a set number of people (in jehova's witness view 144,000 people will go to heaven) will go to heaven.  where does it say that in the bible?

"The answer to the question is, "No. It is not Christian." Like all non-Christian cults, the Jehovah's Witness organization distorts the essential doctrines of Christianity. It denies the deity of Christ, His physical resurrection, and salvation by grace.  This alone makes it non-Christian.  To support its erring doctrines, the Watchtower organization (which is the author and teacher of all official Jehovah's Witness theology), has even altered the Bible to make it agree with its changing and non-Christian teachings."

I dated a JW. It didn't last long. Never met the parents, but she was a neurotic wreck. According to her, these JW communities are rife with back-stabbing, adultery, lying, and all manner of nastiness while hypocritically putting on an angelic, pious facade for outsiders.

That's par for the course among mystic-heads, IME. The more "enlightened" or "godly" someone calls themselves, the more you better watch out.

My advice? Unless she's looking to leave the JWs, dump her, and quick! :seeya:

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

Re: Jehova's Witness? [Re: countchocula420]

Jehova's Witnesses are a contradictory bunch. Beginning from the very name of their faith, the name Jehova is an English, and hence a modernist interpretation of the Hebrew transliteration YHVH -יהוה‎ - Yod Heh Vav Heh.
There is no 'J' sound in Hebrew (or in Greek for that matter. Jesus is an English rendering of Iesous). They are very literal, so when the Book of Revelations speaks in a symbolic language about 144,000 'mansions' in the Heavenly Jerusalem, JWs calculated that Heaven's 144,000 houses had been filled, and that Heaven itself (as a place with spatial dimension) had No Vacancies as of 1938. Consequently, God was going to cleanse the Earth of all the evil, pollution, exploitation, etc., and establish a New Earth.

Now, aside from the confounding of symbolism for literalism in scriptures, there is the additional confusion of a metaphysical Paradise (from the Hebrew PARDES ('orchard') http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pardes_(Jewish_exegesis) with a recreated planet, which, ostensibly, would still be revolving around our Sun, ignores cosmological concerns, like our Sun's eventually Nova death in the unforeseeable future.

"Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree" - Galatians 3:13, is the line that Witnesses adhere to, and they do no, consequently, use a cross as a symbol of their faith. In Islam,  Jesus crucifixion is denied, based on the same notion. Certain Gnostics believe similarly, or that Simon the Cyrene was crucified instead, or a 'phantom body' of Jesus.

Another significant theological issue is the JW's adherence to the ancient Arian heresy, which considered Jesus the Christ to be subordinate to God, in opposition to the orthodox doctrine of the Nicean Creed:
We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, the maker of heaven and earth, of things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the begotten of God the Father, the Only-begotten, that is of the essence of the Father.
God of God, Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten and not made; of the very same nature of the Father, by Whom all things came into being, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible.

Who for us humanity and for our salvation came down from heaven, was incarnate, was made human, was born perfectly of the holy virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit.
By whom He took body, soul, and mind, and everything that is in man, truly and not in semblance.

He suffered, was crucified, was buried, rose again on the third day, ascended into heaven with the same body, [and] sat at the right hand of the Father.
He is to come with the same body and with the glory of the Father, to judge the living and the dead; of His kingdom there is no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, in the uncreated and the perfect; Who spoke through the Law, prophets, and Gospels; Who came down upon the Jordan, preached through the apostles, and lived in the saints.
We believe also in only One, Universal, Apostolic, and [Holy] Church; in one baptism in repentance, for the remission, and forgiveness of sins; and in the resurrection of the dead, in the everlasting judgement of souls and bodies, and the Kingdom of Heaven and in the everlasting life.

This was Johannine theology, which is radically different from the Synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke) in which Jesus was 'a man anointed by God.' In John, Jesus is, conversely, 'God clothed with flesh.' It is straight out of the incarnational ideas of the Greeks, in the way that God (Zeus: Greek, Deus: Latin) inseminated mortal women who bore demigods - half God, half human, like Heracles and Dionysus. This notion was duly rejected by the Jews over the centuries, who had their own mythology, and who did not recognize that particular confounding of metaphysics and physics in a God-man. The Jehova's Witnesses have taken a theological view that was considered heretical, non-Trinitarian, closer to the original Christian view, and is probably closer to the truth in the case of a historical Jesus. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arius

Nice post. I didn't realize JWs followed the Aryan heresy. That particular debate has been divisive since the earliest days of Christianity. I thought it was long gone.

I think it's wrong to say they're not Christians. There are an endless number of flavors of Christianity. They're just not orthodox. Any group that uses the Gospels as religious texts is Christian. Even the Branch Davidians were Christian.

And what's this about "following the Bible word for word"? It's a conglomeration of texts written at different points in history, by different people, for lots of different reasons. It's complex, confusing, rewritten a few times, self-contradictory, and we've lost the social context to even understand what it's referring to in most cases.

I used to think JW was a religion for stupid people until I had a photography teacher who was JW. He seemed to be a truly happy, kind, fulfilled individual. It was working for him. I had to rethink my opinion.

It's a heresy. But that's OK, I can respect heretics. I'm considered to be a heretic myself. I just don't share the same heresy at the Witnesses, and I do not attempt to accumulate merit by proselytizing.
