I think I italicised the word 'their' in the phrase 'their group' in the post, to emphasise that the cooperation is group specific. Religion causes conflict primarily between different faiths or religious priorities, not amongst people of the same faith.

I dunno if I agree with that in the first place though (that humans would be naturally slaughtering eachother, ie).

Yes but humans spread the memes. The memes are simply the information that is transferring... so yes you can say that any concept at all isa meme housed in a skull... it doesnt matter. What matters is how the memes survive and spread, and a point I was trying to make is that they spread from people with influence and knowledge. Memes don't just randomly flutter around. They rely in factors such as language, familiarity of concept (receptibility), and integration into existing social knowledge.

That depends on whether you view genes as spreading them selves. Memes and genes are practically synonymous hence the similar pronunciations/spellings.

Quote:
I think you are imagining too much of a modern day situation. As with the parts of your post that I did not quote, I respond that you are taking into consideration a bunch of memes that have spread only in the last few hundred years, because of the increasing influence of atheistic noblemen/influential persons.

Memes have spread... or lack of memes being accepted? You can't call true atheism a meme because the very nature of being atheist is not even considering whether there is a god or not, unless otherwise provoked most atheists never even think about anything you could define as religious.

all paradigms are memes. atheism is not a 'non belief'. it is a belief that there is no appropriate description of god to believe in. It is often a belief also that the universe is an accident, big bang, etc.

and, memes, just like genes, need suitable environments to survive. Memes are not like DNA in organisms, but is more like the genes in viruses, which need a host to survive, and may benefit or detriment its carrier.

When you place memes in books, computer, audio/video... your argument falls apart.

Also, listen to more atheists like Sir Jonathan Wolfe Miller. When ever asked about how they came to be "atheist" the answer is not well I looked at the data and formed my own opinions or I read about atheism and started to believe it, is more often then not "I never even considered religion or I never, even at young age, thought this was really how the world worked"

edit: corrected

Do you just make this stuff up? Look up the Greek root of the word. Being 'without belief' is not a belief no matter how often it is stated as some sort of 'system'.

Babies are without belief in God and yet are likely to believe in The Big Bang? Is this a joke? Modern Atheism goes back to the 1800s. They also believed in the Big Bang?

1650's I thought, but same difference. But atheism in general can trace its roots back to Epicurus.

Good post...

a thought I have, wouldnt it be good to describe exactly what "belief in god" is - and it seems an all too general idea with many varying notions per person. Defining what people think of when we use the term god is key and unfortunately or not I think its very hard to nail down this concept so tread carefully when critiquing "it"

nonetheless good thoughts there - maybe ponder the different notions of the slippery concept god

If you have 20$US and you have a couple of hours a week to spare, you really really should check out Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon. Dennett thoroughly explains it all, and anything he doesn't concretely cover he points out and scrutinizes to the best of his scientifically philosophical ability.

Also: torrent program + isohunt.com + printer = same effect

Sorry,,, what?

Greek root of the word says nothing about being 'without belief'? it actually implies 'bias' of the 'without-god' camp. Having a bias is a positive notion, it is not the lack of something, it is the presence of an effect, the a belief that influences someone's convictions. Atheists are people whose convictions are based on their 'atheistic' belief.

People do not tend to 'lack' belief in things. In fact, the only things people tend to lack beliefs on are things they have not thought about, in general.

So although some of us can try to live without beliefs (or at least, live with the ability to constantly switch between possible beliefs), it would be silly to deny that atheists, in general, believe in the lack of god.

If you want to use a modern re-adaptation of the word that asserts that atheism refers to a-theism, then that is ok, but don't get up my ass for 'making stuff up'. It is a clumsy use of language considering that it re-interprets old conventions in the wrong way. The 'a' in 'atheism' is associated with 'atheos', it is not associated with 'a-theism'. (well, it wasnt, until relatively recently in the history of the use of the word)

As for babies believing in big bang, well even if we take your definition of atheism that includes all 'non-theists' (note the difference between a non-theist and an atheist), you might need to stop having ludicrous amounts of sex while reading shroomery, because the steam in the air is blurring your vision, and you did not read the word "often".

Just because a few religions have hijacked the word, distorting it from its true meaning and making it derogatory, does not mean we have to put up with that falsified definition.

God is first and for most a belief.

I dont quite understand... those are definitions and etymologies that I took into consideration in my post.

your definitions write 'without god'. did you now read my post? atheism is not 'a(without)-theism(believing in god/s)'. it is 'athe(os)(godless)-ism' (in the context of 'theism' and 'atheism', the ism denotes the significant basis of belief/assumption)

God is a belief... so is the lack of god.

Though even if you are trully without belief, then you can still be a 'pragmatic atheist' - insofar as in, treating the world as if there is no god.

I think this is a wise path.

On the other hand, I also gain meaning by contemplating all accessible belief systems and how I stand in relation to them. I like to think about what God would think of my actions? What about Allah? Yaweh? how far has my spirit progressed through reincarnations? What would Enki, Anu and Enlil think about the human race, let alone me? Do I have the potential to become a warrior spirit and dine in heaven? Am I going to be part of some sick game when its all over?

What is it to be godless? It is to be with out belief in god(s)... case in point. This does not denote an active belief that there is no god. Atheism is more often then not used in the definition you put forth, but that is not it's only definition and that certain isn't what atheism originally was(as was shown in the quotes).

I can't help but get the feeling that you believe, yes believe, that all atheists actively deny the existence of a god or gods. This is most certainly NOT the case. While many, I'd even go so far as to say the majority, would actively deny the existence of god(s), there are still plenty of us around that actively know, yes know, there is no reason to believe in god and hence the question of whether there is a god or gods rarely comes to mind and most certainly never gets answered.

Quote:
pragmatic atheist

Funny you should mention that, and I know by now you are tired of me talking about Dennett, but he proposes, since pragmatic atheists are almost always just refered to as atheists, that we should give them a new name; Brights. If you so choose to know more, you know where to find it

So essentially what you are saying is you take joy in contemplating and ruminating on far out ideas. I would wonder why you feel the need to share the ideas you accumulate during such a ridiculous pass time as though it were likely to be helpful and meaningful to others.
