Just looked into spray malt, it appears to be standard DME.

If air is trapped in there, it does not reach sterilization temperature. You don't need steam to get into the vessel, steam gets created by the liquid in the vessel and displaces the air.

I have used cling wrap and parafilm for Petris. Have also used just micropore tape (which did NOT keep out contam).

The thing I'm using now that's cheaper than parafilm and better than cling wrap is that grafting tape for plants.

It's usually green, some is clear. Make sure you get it wide enough (inch or two inch, don't get half inch), but eBay has it,

and Amazon has it. It's perfect for this. I seal the end of it with a little microspore tape.

It's cheap but you can also get it almost free if you order from China and don't mind waiting a few months.
