buying agar - help
    #5458416 - 03/30/06 07:11 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

hi to everyone!
I'm going to try first time growing mushrooms  Have experience in growing ganja although, some year ago. The thing is that I'm from Croatia and here is impossible or very hard to get shrooms, and they are very expensive... price on market is 1g cubensis for 15 usd... and thats a lott for most of the people here, and for me also.

I'm trying to buy agar for some time but i just dont have enough money... here there is only one place where you can buy it and it cost 170usd 250g. pda agar powder bottle... and that is fking expensive, for me and all people with brain in their heads. I just dont have that much money.

Can someone tell me some agar powder supply center in Europe. I searching for 250g. or less agar powder with some reasonable price. Many thanks.

I'll just post this for everone, and because I am unsure if it will work, the details sound the same, but I could be wrong because I have never used Agar. GL I hope this helps! If this will work please post!

I'm not sure if there is much of an oriental population in Croata. But, if there is. You might try looking for agar in any oriental grocery store.

Agar-Agar
Vegetable 'gelatine' derived from a number of seaweeds (Gelidium amansii) which are processed by boiling and drying. Agar-agar is used as a quick-setting base for many sweets and desserts in Asia. Refrigerators are a luxury many people in Asia do not have, and agar-agar's chief advantage is that it will set without refrigeration and not melt down in tropical heat. It is also used as a finishing glaze.

Agar-agar is more readily available in Asia than gelatine. It also has the advantage of being 'halal', so is acceptable to Moslems while gelatine, derived from animals, is not.

Purchasing and storing: Refined agar-agar is purchased as fine white powder in small packets, or extruded into large square sticks (sometimes coloured) which the Japanese call kanten, or fine, crinkly strands (usually in bundles bound with pink raffia ties) in long cellophane packets. These strands are used, soaked in cold water and softened, as a texture ingredient to supplement the very expensive bird's nest in soups, and also as an addition to cold platters or salads in Chinese cuisine. Dried forms of agar-agar will keep indefinitely in an airtight container.

Preparation: Quantities should be measured carefully, depending on the result required. Each form of agar-agar needs a different approach. If using powder, sprinkle it over the surface of the measured water in a saucepan, bring to the boil, and it should dissolve in a few minutes of simmering. If using strands or sticks, soak in cold water for an hour, drain, bring to the boil in the measured amount of water and simmer until dissolved. Sugar, flavouring and colouring are added and it sets as a firm jelly without refrigeration, even in tropical climates. It is the base for the famous Almond Bean Curd, Coconut Jelly, Awayuki and numerous other sweets throughout Asia.

Other Languages:
Burma: kyauk kyaw
China: dai choy goh
Indonesia: agar-agar
Malaysia: agar-agar
Japan: kanten
Philippines: gulaman
Sri Lanka: chun chow
Thailand: woon
