Hey fellow fungi enthusiasts!
Are you ready to embark on a journey into the mesmerizing world of cubensis mushroom cultivation? Well, buckle up and prepare for some of my noobish insights into the cardinal rules of growing these magical fungi. Based on my research on the Shroomery forums over the past couple months, I've compiled a handy list for your beginner mycological adventure, nothing new here, just bare bone basics. So let's dive in!
1. Cleanse Those Spores: Before you start your cultivation endeavor, it's vital to ensure your spores are squeaky clean. Get your hands on agar or opt for the trusty PF Tek method to give those little fellas a healthy start.
2. Say No to Spores on Grain: Picture this: spores directly on grain, a combination that spells disaster. Avoid this nightmarish scenario as it greatly increases the chances of contamination. Trust me, it's like sending mushrooms to a germ-ridden party.
3. Grains Galore: When it comes to grain preparation, find a tek and follow it to the T; the soaking and simmering game is crucial. Give your grains the royal treatment they deserve. Rye, wheat berries, millet, Milo, Wild Bird Seed and oats are fantastic options to fuel your mushroom-growing ambitions.
4. Pressure Sterilize, My Friend: Treat your grain spawn like royalty by pressure sterilizing it. Aim for 15 psi and a minimum of 90 minutes for jars (120 min for bags), but hey, if you want to go the extra mile, I'd highly recommend even longer sterilization times. It's like sending unwanted guests on an extended vacation!
5. Ventilation Vibes: want to ensure proper sterilization of your grain spawn? Don't forget to vent the air out of your pressure cooker for at least 10 minutes before reaching optimal pressure. Think of it as a mushroom spa day, allowing them to bask in a contamination-free environment.
6. Field Capacity Matters: Squeeze it, baby! When it comes to substrate hydration, we're all about that field capacity. Squeeze your substrate firmly to check if it's just right; a couple drops of water to a very gentle stream of water is what we are looking for. Not too dry, not too wet. Think of Goldilocks searching for the perfect porridge.
7. Help! My mushrooms arent Photosynthesizing: Mushrooms aren't plants! Keep those nasty nutrients like Gypsum, coffee, and additives away from them like the plague.
8. Goodbye, Hygrometers: In the world of mushroom cultivation, ambient humidity is not our cup of tea. So, bid farewell to hygrometers. Instead, focus on maintaining ideal surface conditions and let your mushrooms thrive in a microclimate designed just for them.
9. Temperature Tango: Cubensis mushrooms are temperamental dancers when it comes to temperature. Keep the dance floor between 70-75°F (21-24°C) for optimal growth, Under 58 and your mushrooms start slow dancing, higher than 84, and your mushrooms are doing a quickstep (potentially with any bacteria that managed to make it to the dance floor!). Also remember to heat the room not the floor, so throw those heat pads out! it's not a salsa club; it's a mushroom disco!
10. Sterile Technique Is Boss: To avoid contamination nightmares, embrace the power of sterile technique. Laminar flow hoods/filter fan units and SABs (Still Air Boxes) are your best friends in this quest, glove boxes are a no go unless you want to fling contaminated air over everything. Think of it as playing mushroom surgeon – gloves on, mask up, and let the cultivation magic begin!
11. Say No to Mushroom Graffiti: While we appreciate artistic endeavors, misting the walls of your monotubs is at best useless. We want our mushrooms to grow on the substrate, not on plastic! Keep those walls dry, my friends.
12. Mist-aken Identity: Avoid misting with hydrogen peroxide or bleach. They might seem like friendly allies, but they can harm your delicate mycelium. Stick to a clean, balanced environment without the cleaning supplies. Mycelium lives Matter
13. Vermiculite Baking Myth: No need to bake vermiculite! It's already sterile straight out of the bag. Baking it can mess with its moisture-holding capacity, so let it remain uncooked for your mushroom's sake.
14. Misting Schedule Shenanigans: Forget about misting on a strict schedule. Mushrooms have their own pace and will let you know when they need hydration. Don't play the misting timekeeper—follow their natural cues instead.
15. We arent fans of Fanning: Lets not suffocate our mushrooms and expect a large gust of wind is enough air for them every 12 hours. Mushrooms, like us, require constant but slight fresh air. You wouldn't like it if we shut you in a confined space with no air and every so often took a leaf blower to your face. Or maybe you do like it ... Im not here to kink shame.
16. On that topic... Automate your Monotubs: By doing nothing. Throw away that reptifogger and heat pad. Monotubs automate themselves when properly dialed in.
17. The Patience Paradox: Patience, my friends! Don't rush your mushrooms like an impatient audience at a comedy show. Embrace the waiting game, and your patience will be rewarded with abundant laughter-inducing harvests
There you have it folks, Thanks for coming to my ted talk!

Tl;dr gonna post a thread asking if I should fan and why my MSS to grains is contaminating when I wiped the needle with alcohol
Nice write up though

I put a section for automating monotubs, and .... Fanning, for reasons. If you know you know.

this is so cute lol i love the titles of the sections. although baking verm is scientific fact… the rest of the write up is excellent
though on a serious note, i think it would be good to include that cubes actually fruit just fine anywhere from like 58f-84f it’ll just be slower on the lower end & faster (but also allow contam to spread more rapidly if spawn isn’t clean) on the high end. i just can see people taking the “optimal range” as a sign they need to like incubate shit & add heat mats which is also stuff we tend to discourage on here bc it usually does more harm than good. if heat is necessary, heat the room/ambient environment but not the tub directly
