My Elementary Coir Tek 149

I have received multiple msg's and always get asked how do I prepare my coir, so I decided to create a coir tek, so here it is. Hopefully everyone finds it helpful.
IN MY JOURNAL
Damion's Coir TekI have been asked several times how do I prepare my coir, so here is a quick step by step on how I prepare my coir. I have done it this way about 20-25 times with no contamination's before the 3rd flush. This is a very elementary tek but it works wonders. Supplies Needed1 Brick of Coir 2 Quarts of Verm 5 Quarts of Spawn A 5 gallon bucket with a lid <---NEED TO USE A BUCKET STEP 1For the above recipe I pour 4 quarts of water into a pan or in this case my Pressure Cooker. I turn the heat up to high and wait for it to boil. STEP 2I place 1 brick of coir in a 5 gallon bucket. SIMPLE I know. STEP 3Pour 2 quarts of vermiculite into the 5 gallon bucket with the coir. STEP 4Take the boiling water off the stove. STEP 5Pour the boiling water into the 5 gallon bucket over the coir/verm mix. STEP 6Put the lid on the bucket and let it sit for 30-60 minutes. STEP 7After the 30-60 minutes you need to come back and stir everything up really well. Place the lid back on it and let it sit for 2-4 hours. STEP 8Time to prepare the mono tub. I put duct tape over all the holes in the tub. STEP 9 Part AAfter the 2-4 hours I then pour the coir into the mono tub and then test the temperature of the coir. The temp of the coir needs to be 80-90 degrees before you can add spawn. If it is to hot then place the lid on the mono tub and let it sit for another 2-4 hours. STEP 9 Part BMake sure you leave alittle bit of the coir in the bucket for a top layer. STEP 10When the temperature is right get your 5 quarts of spawn, and add it to the coir in the tub STEP 11Mix the spawn and the coir up really well. Try and get the spawn throughout the coir evenly. STEP 12Now take that left over coir that was in the bucket and use it to put a top cover layer over the entire surface so that there are no exposed grains. STEP 13Now this step is optional but I do it. I cover the entire tub with a black garbage bag and place it on a shelf of wherever you decide to. Come back 10 days later and take a look at it and see how far along it is. STEP 14After the 10 days you need to check on the tub if it is 100% colonized then you need to put it into fruiting. I do this by taking off the duct tape and stuffing the holes with polyfill, then introduce light and FAE.

Na the only time I use gypsum is when I make spawn jars I add it to the water that I soak the rye in.

Awesome. I'm planning on doing something like that soon and was thinking I would be trying to mix it and cook it some but just adding boiling water sounds much more simple.

It is very simple. Works everytime for me. The most important thing I would say is not to add to much water and also to check the temperature before adding your spawn. Cause if it is too hot you can kill the mycelium. That is why I wait till it gets under 100 degrees at least.

Thats understandable. Do you try to always add the spawn when its still warm? If so maybe I'll boil my candy thermometer and keep that with it to watch the temp.
Would letting it cool all the way maybe overnight even increase the chance of other things getting the chance to grow?

No it doesn't have to be warm to add the spawn. I just don't like to wait over night cause u never know what kinda nasties can get in there. So I like to get the spawn added and getting it growing as soon as possible.

Also it doesnt take that long, it takes around 3-4 hours total from time of boiling the water till when u can add your spawn. Once you put the coir into the mono tub it usually cools down pretty fast.

do you knot the bag to limit fae?
-------------------- LxWxH in inches then multiply .55 (the amount of fl oz in a square inch) then divide that number by 128 (the amount of fl oz in a gallon) to get an accurate amount of volume for the space.
