Hey Panaeolus fam!  I was a little late at casing this.. already cased 3 others.  Then noticed this little yellow area.  Should I worried to eat the fruits that came from this tub?  Toss it? Should I keep it away from the others?  This and one other smelled kinda musky. I gave it a mist before the pictures and put the lid back on for now.

I had yellow spots like this in my semilanceata tubs, could be a yellow fusarium. Some turned red after a while.

Is this photo before you cased and am I seeing pins there?

Your tub does look odd, do your other tubs look like this? Well up to you, if you are not desperate and you have got more coming then
chucking it is the more elegant solution and considering the overall appearance of the surface probably the best thing to do.
But really just my opinion, you could keep it somewhere isolated and see what happens just out of curiosity if you like.

Eating fruits from a moldy tub is OK when your fruits themself do not have any mold on them. I would dehydrate with heat and or make a
tea to be on the safe side.

Thanks Baba Yaga! My other tubs do look fairly similar, but couldn't see any yellow spots or anything in the others.  Another smelled a little musky. And, yes they were fruiting before casing with very poor flushes.  I had a very hard time finding hydrated lime, but finally got it.  I'm for sure getting some horse manure if I do these again, because I used some steer manure compost and picking lots of little twigs and wood pieces out...  not ideal.

I have a question about casing pans:
The recipe that I've been given is 10 parts peat, 10 parts verm, and 1/4 part hydrated lime. First, if that's by volume, that seems like a lot of lime.

If the idea for the lime is to adjust the pH of the peat, why use the peat in the first place? If a low to neutral pH is desirable, why not just go with coir/verm?

And is that recipe by weight or volume? Either way, that seems like a dangerous amount of lime, so I wanted to check before pasteurizing this mix and casing. I've had a lot of trouble with Fuserium in my jars (I think inadequately sterilized feed store oats might have been to blame for this batch) and I have a few species I've been trying very hard to get to this point. But a couple tubs need to be done, like, yesterday.

Hey Hongosamungus.. I think the standard is to use 1 teaspoon lime per cup of peat. That what I did:  1 cup peat, one cup verm, and 1 tsp hydrated lime.  I got a different lime at first, but didn't use it because pelletized lime has too much magnesium. The reason coir is not ideal is because mycelium colonizes it faster than peat.  And in that case you wouldn't have a casing layer anymore.

I had a few bags of gyms and cubes that got yellow contam a couple months ago, smelled really musty. I originally thought it was gyms doing their thing and turning yellow... definitely wasn't the gyms because it showed up in the cubes and smelled dank (and not in a good way).

So I ran out of coir but I had some jiffy laying around, and didn't feel like breaking up horse shit for 10 min... I made a mix of straw/peat/coir/verm/h-poo at roughly a 4-1-1-1-1 ratio. I've never used peat for substrate. Should this work for pans? Or should I just toss it in the garden and make a new batch?

It's measured by volume and that is a ratio of 1:80, does this still sound like a lot of lime? Some people don't use lime at all with fast fruiters like pans.

The thing is you could use coir or verm or a mixture of both to case. I had good results with just vermiculite but the casing is just one
piece of the puzzle, if you use different materials then you might have to adjust how you let your substrates colonize and fruit,
thickness and hydration of the casing and such. You will have to tweak your process and try things/experiment and not many people can give
you advice since not many use alternatives. If you follow a TEK then follow it, if you change things around then expect different results.

My next experiments will be trying to get consistent pinning without any casing at all. It worked very well once so I'm keen to find out
how to repeat this with reliable results.

Mr. Giggles i think it will be fine so go ahead and give it a few houres at 160f/70c.
Next time save the peat for casing and give it some more poo so it is a 4-1-1-2 mix.
S/c/v/h-poo. 12,5% poo is a littel low i think but it will probably worke fine.

Another very good and easy pasteurization method is to put it in a bag in a crock pot on warm for 12+ hours. I've seen a TC list this as their Tek, and for me, it is consistently at 150Β°F every time.

Use a probe thermometer the first few times to make sure, but it's so consistent regardless of bag size I stopped using it because it wasn't worth the risk of poking a hole in the bag with the probe.(happened more than once)

The cambos overlaid. I peeled some off, and it looks like there are hyphal knots. My casing was really thin, and I wonder if they need closer to 1/4 inch?

I like to wait a while to consolidate before casing. I find it reduces the frequency of the casing layer getting colonized. Opinions vary wildly on timelines. I've experimented unscientifically and have not found a clear winner on the times so I end up just doing whatever. If I had to pick a target, I'd say 5 days after full surface colonization, I apply the casing layer and let rest for 24-48 hours before putting into the fruiting tent. I've also gone straight into the tent after casing with no ill effect.
