I've finally got pans fruiting! NECD in the photo.

Anyone have an idea why the tops are cracking? If its helpful, I used boomer bag and straw sub. Searching the forums for "cracked" results in posts about crack so no luck there.

Also, when should I harvest since they are acting different than others posts for NECD?

The caps crack as they dry out. What's the humidity in the tent?

Yup too dry. Have never seen this on my indoor grows but have definitely seen it outdoors when we get a good rain that pushes up some fruits and then the weather turns very sunny and dry. They look just like that.

Looks like you’re right at the edge of perfect conditions though, they still grew normally and everything. I bet if you either cut the air a little or preferably raise rh you’ll get great tubs. Don’t be afraid of moisture with pans, you can’t really drown them.

Is it known what about manure (or rather a complete bulk sub with e.g. manure + straw) makes such a difference for Pans wanting to fruit? (I mean if you compare it to just spawning grains to something like CVG). Is it just the nitrogen? Is it multiple specific nutes like also phosphorus things like that?
Or is it a more complex and maybe even biotrophic thing? (like how big of a role does the consistency play?)

It seems like a pretty critical question for potentially making things simpler/easier, so it frustrates me i cant answer this question. (since it may then be possible to just supplement grains with the corrected nute levels and spawn to a substrate that wasnt pasteurized but just hydrated)

There is almost no scientific data on the subject, except when it comes to button mushrooms. The reasons for that are obvious, there is commercial interest and no legal issues. When it comes to button mushrooms, research papers I've read say that:

1) The mycelium feeds on the mass of dead bacteria - utilizing their lipid membranes, intracellular vitamins and so on. Bacteria make most of the mass of manure, compost, etc.

2) As to the biotropic thing you mentioned, the mycelium secretes volatile compounds that inhibit fruiting (self-inhibition). Those compounds are degraded by bacteria in the casing, which in turn causes primordia formation/fruiting. This is slightly different to the manure sub thing (as sterilized manure obviously also works), but it's interesting as well.

Today I've watered my Bisporus flowerpot and later in the day I came to look at it again, and from like 2 meters away I could smell chocolate. I smelled the surface of the pot and sure enough it was coming from there. I've seen molds develop on the surface so there's competition on the manure down there, but this smell gives me hope. Unless there are also molds that smell like chocolate, but so far I think I've only detected this in Pan myc.

Bisporus on manure/straw, spawned 7 days ago, smells good. How are we looking?

Not sure when to case bispo, but based on teks I think this needs at least a few more days to get puffier myc all over it, not just in patches, yes?

That’s probably ready to be cased. On the previous page you can see where mine  was at and I got the green light to case from Adas. Granted it may be a little easier to tell with darker substrates. But mine was ready to be cased within 4 days so I’d imagine you’re totally in the clear

Has anybody used straw pellets for the straw portion of their bulk substrate for pans? I just got some wheat straw pellets that were sold as animal bedding and when hydrated they turn into a muddy consistency - really hard to check for field capacity because the stuff must be like powder before they pellet it...I don't see what the advantage of this stuff is over coir - should I ditch it and just go with coir/manure?

Also don't see how  you'd mix this stuff properly with coir and manure...seems that a big part of the straw would be to keep the mixture "fluffy".

I might also be getting confused by old posts that advocate the use of straw in one form or another. Sorry for running over old ground, but what would be  your ideal substrate for Pan. tropicalis? I finally have three nice jars of spawn and don't want to blow it...

Beautiful, great success!

Guys, my smell wasn't fooling me yesterday. I couldnt help but dig into the Bisporus/Thyme pot today, and there's super thick healthy myc inside! Just a lot deeper down than I expected. I poured in some more spawn just for the hell of it.
I'm very excited to say the least!
