Mycelium seems to have a mind of it's own.

These are reishi btw

Maybe it encourages it more circular growth? The bottom pic almost looks slightly hexagonal to me. Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't the hexagon one of the most, if not the most efficient shape in nature? I know bees make them, as do bubbles.

It does make sense, I will say that but myc will round out quickly, unless something else causing it not to. Myc does kinda do what it wants though. Punch aren't really needed for anything other than cosmetic reasons. If they help you though, by all means. Results are what matters and you def got that Hind. Love your grows.

I’m working on making a cow poo substrate for my cyans and I’m contemplating adding some finely cut barley straw, but I’m worried about increasing my odds of getting trich or something. I saw some posts from RR about barley straw being prone to trich

Awesome pics…. Especially that first one. Those are clearly square plugs and fairly large too - I would think the larger the plug, the more pronounced the non-circular growth pattern would be due to the larger differential in distance the mycelium will have at the starting point. Yet those all ended up forming perfectly round circles. I kind of see an oval shape on that pin clone plate of yours there but even that is still fairly round. I wonder if there is some kind of strategy the mycelium has where it speeds up some areas and slows down others until everything is an even circle? And if so, why that is. Also thanks for the kind words! I really enjoy watching your awesome grows as well!

Mr Giggles - when you reference a hexagon shape, which pic are you referring to - my last one or your last one? I had not heard that about hexagon shapes and nature though…. Now I’m curious about it and will have to read up on it.

Hindsight - your last pic. Looking at it again it's more half circle and half very rounded hexagon lol. A circle might be the single most efficient shape by itself. Hexagons fill up the most amount of space with the least amount of material in a tessalated plane. Honeycombs might form do to the circles being composed together tho, not sure. A couple links:

working since few months with a little tool I made for agar transfer, I will try to do a write up on this soon..

Very nice VL, I have a clone that has some nice myc but a lot of bac, and taking a more biopsy style wedge would be just the thing I think! I look forward to your write up.

Here is the little write up  https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27710061#27710061

Will hpoo and coir work as a substrate?

Yeah. That’s a pretty easy answer to find though not gonna lie

At the top of the page near your username it should say “search posts” and then you can type in key words to comb through past posts and threads. So like if you type in “pan cyan substrate” you’d get some decent results. Or maybe you could search something like “pan cyan on hpoo”

Coir and H-manure works great. I use a ratio of 50/50. Make sure to keep the mix fluffy.

I'm getting ready to transfer a full grain jar of P. tropicalis to some of MacMerdin's Simple Pan-Cakes tek. However, and please excuse my stupidity, but it is unclear in the OP about this (8 years old) at what point the substrate for the cakes/jars is to be pasteurized. I'm assuming, but wanted to be sure, that in the case of using grain spawn I would pasteurize the media, load them into sterilized containers, mix the media with the spawn in front of a flow hood, and then just top them off with pasteurized verm?

I'm a stranger here myself.

With them I believe they are PCed for 90min. Like a Brf cake, mixed together than PCed.

You are mixing two completely different methods of growing. Pick one and stick with it.

Yeah it seems you might be mixing things up a bit. You are describing cake growing on one hand, which uses no grain spawn, and then you are describing the more standard pasteurized substrate growing.

If you have grain spawn, just pasteurize some manure/coir or manure/straw/verm and mix your grain spawn in. That is what most growers are doing today.

If you want to run cakes, you sterilize the cakes in the jars in the PC and then inoculate them with LC or a spore syringe (LC far, far preferred over spore syringes). There is no place for grain spawn here. The grain is the brown rice flour that's mixed up as part of the cakes.

First successful bisporus tub.  Full micpore coverage on the bottom hole and 1/3rd on the top was the ticket.  I didn’t really worry about light misting, doused these suckers twice a day.  This is the second flush.  Way smaller than they look.

I think my initial failures were due to swampiness of my horse pop Verm substrate.  Keep it fluffy no matter the mix.
