Is there a limit to how many times you should break and shake Pan jars?

Mycosmith, those are some beauties! I spy some fat stipes in there!

After last page's discussion, I am now in agreement with putting it on grain anyway.

Panny, only one shake is recommended by most. I have shaken a jar twice though, but the slow colonization indicated a weak culture. (Not potency wise necessarily, but it just didn't want to colonize.)

Hi Adas and Myc hunt i think it is My Small trays that cheats you. They are 12x16x7cm. The high shroom i think was around 12-14cm. It was cut down after the pic.

I finally got a couple of decent grain jars of tropicalis. For a newbie, this was quite a bit of work and I'd like to not screw up the next step. What is the proper method of mixing grain spawn with substrate with this species? Any considerations as to spawn/substrate ratio? My understanding is that less myc to substrate might be better to start...

Be sure to pasteurize your substrate. I've been doing coir/verm/manure and straw/verm/manure and like both though it does seem that the mushrooms I've grown, on average, like straw more than coir, but I also have less consistent results with straw than coir. When doing straw/verm/manure I like a 1:2:1 ratio lately. The current consensus is a grain spawn to sub ratio of 1:4 but I go 1:2 to 1:4 and both work fine. I like the faster colonization of 1:2 and I do not find I have contam issues.

:whathesaid:

The only thing I have to add is I've had success both from mixing the grain and bulk, as well as layering the grain and bulk. Most growers here mix to the best of my knowledge.

When using straw, it's easy to mix the bulk and grain spawn if the straw was chopped up short enough, like 1 to maybe 2 inches. When I stopped chopping up the straw, I had a hard time mixing the spawn and bulk when a lot of the straw was long, like several inches long.

I found it easier to make thin layers of alternating bulk and spawn, starting with and ending with bulk layers. My layers were pretty thin, just under a 1/2 inch of bulk, with just enough spawn to spread around on top of each bulk layer, but not even enough to completely cover. (Edit: There shouldn't be any grain on the top layer of bulk.) I ended up with 5 layers of bulk and 4 layers of spawn to make a total substrate depth of 2 inches. I could press it down as hard as I wanted but the straw kept it nice and fluffy, while it didn't have any air pockets. You don't want the substrate getting compacted, but that's hard to do when using straw.

I was using a spawn to bulk ratio around 1 to 4. While I was using a substrate depth of 2 inches, I now know that 2 1/2 to 3 inches of substrate can also work.

Hey hongosamongus i Will also like to point you in the right way. More gain/spawn give faster colonization Which lead to Less chance of contam.

Oh I forgot to mention that you should ensure you have a top layer covering the grain. Doesn't have to be thick. Just enough to cover the grains and leave no grains exposed.

My bisporus tub came through.  Didn’t get a pic at its glory and it flushed out quite unevenly so I chopped them as they were mature, got a little over three grams dry.  Happy with this success. They are finicky fuckers. Can’t wait to see if it’ll flush again after a dunk.

Nice work!! I've grown probably 10-12 trays of bispos and not one of them was a full flush. A couple never fruited. Most trays push up a 10-50% coverage. So you did very well in my opinion.

Well done Adrenaline!

I've read through this entire thread and I don't think I've ever seen a full canopy of bisporus. One or two of Jake's trays may have been close. I'm still hoping I will get a full canopy of any variety of Pan someday...

Hey adrenalinen Nice bisp. You end your post with "Can’t wait to see if it’ll flush again after a dunk." i dont think anybody do that. If pan's are 95% water an you have 3 dry grams you have only remove 57 grams/ml. Of water. If i was you i Will water it 50-100 ml of water with a syringe to spred it equally.

Have any of you guys ever noticed pseudo-sclerotia in your bisporus jars or substrate? I'm just curious because my cincts from Warren Co., PA, look a lot like bisporus to me. Idk if there was any DNA testing done on this strain, but they don't really look like the cincts I find around here. The stipes look a lot different, as does the black bands.

Interesting observation :strokebeard:

Last Sunday, i made a LI with Pan Tropi mycelium from my 1st agar plate. The mycelium had the consistency of cotton candy mixed with spider web, which i thought was strange. So different than Cube mycelium. Made it a bit difficult to mix with water but i managed to seperate the strands of mycelium into the water for an LI syringe.
