I think my initial failures were due to swampiness of my horse pop Verm substrate. Keep it fluffy no matter the mix.

Congrats! Very impressive, especially without an FC. But would be impressive even with an FC.

Beautiful tub A_D. I have a shoebox of bisporus pinning right now. Hope it turns out half as well as yours did.

 Excellent stuff @ adrenaline_drip
I'm gonna have to try this mono style Tek from @baba and get in on the fun myself...

Nice pinset indeed.
I have to ask, what is going on with that tub? Looks like an unusual shape or tub in tub and a temperature probe?

Hi Baba Yaga
this is my apporach - mix between regular tub and compressor:

Also at some point in 3-4 days after the tub placed fruiting I use special cover with fans working several minutes every 30 minutes. It improves evaporation and pinning:

But without fans it also works well!

Thatβs getting popular lately, Iβve seen a couple people burying jars in the sub with the mouth exposed and an airstone inside.

That's an interesting setup! You find you need the micropore tape on the holes? Is the humidifier/bubbler on a timer or always on?

Humidifieris switched off to sleep but could be always On if possible. So at night it is just the tub.
Oon the holes just Omnipor.
Temperature is about 26-27

What kind of fans did you use?
Where's a good write up of the "compressor" part of your system?

What is also good here that sometimes I use the same tube to place two trays with different strains there:

I use 40-60 mm fans. Any kind is OK.
Both air200 and air400 is enough:

Or any kind of analogue available.

Thanks for showing your FC. Pretty flexible setup, I like that you can add and remove the different components #modular. Ever ran just the tub?
What kind of substrate are you using?

Could somebody please let me know - if I go with Mcmerdin's (sp.) pan cake method, how long should the the cakes be pasteurized in half pint jars? I have a decent jar of P. tropicalis spawn but don't want to fuck this up, wasn't easy for me to get this far.
Thanks...

Are you talking about a jar of grain spawn? In that case you don't use MacMerdin's cake recipe as bulk substrate because it contains brown rice flour and coffee in a bulk substrate is pretty useless as well. Use coir/H-manure and some straw if you like and pasteurize that.
MacMerdind cakes are inoculated with LC and not with grains and you will have to sterilize them for 90 min.

Thanks. I have several spore syringes of other species, and a single print of NecD...and also a few plates of tropicalis. What would the best way to turn the colonized plates into LC for use with the Pancakes?
Sorry to ask this again, but how much straw would you suggest I add to a bulk substrate?
I don't have access to horse poo right now, but I do have a number of bags of North Spore's "Boomr bag" mix. I've asked them for their trade secrets regarding what's in it, which of course they did not divulge, but it is horse manure based. I'd imagine that the rest is coir and a few other ingredients. Do you think this could be used with straw for a tropicalis bulk grow?
One thing I know is there's no verm in it...

Thanks, but if you could also let me know about the water container part as well - do you use airstones?
Also, are you casing your pans after complete colonization with this method? If so, what are you using?

Make a syringe with sterile water squirt some of that water onto a plate, scrape/agitate with the needle tip to dislodge mycelium and suck it up. Use the syringe to inoculate cakes.
I am not familiar with the Boomer Bags but if it is manure based and was delivered pasteurized and not sterilized then it should be fine to use.
You don't have to add straw at all, I use just manure coir so as long as the BB substrate is nice and fluffy you can use it as is assuming it comes properly pasteurized and wasn't sitting around in your cupboard for ages. If you have to fluff it up then I would use vermiculite as it doesn't require additional prepping.

Thanks. I'm assuming that the cakes should also be pasteurized...if so, what pressure/time?
Sorry if I'm being dense. My issue now is that I need the grain spawn to go to bulk and the LC to go to the cakes...so just want to get it straight.
Also, for the grain spawn, what to you think is the preferred substrate depth? I have noticed that the Boomr bag stuff goes anaerobic and is good at growing trich - that's why when this stuff is gone I'm going make my own bulk for Pans. It does compact quite a bit...

You are mixing up the terms pasteurized and sterilized.
pasteurizing is: heating up bulk substrate till the core temperature hits 155-170 F and hold the temperature for at least an hour. No pressure required. Examples: manure based bulk substrate.
sterilizing is: running jars in a PC for 90-120 minute under at least 15 PSI of pressure. Example: grain spawn, BRF cakes
Sterilize the MacMerdin cakes for 90min @ 15 psi.
Looks like MacMerdin is using spores to inoculate his cakes.
