Final results from my first successful BVI (V.L) grow using a NaOH CO2 scavenger. Already made prints, they're dropping spores well.

1" thick sub of 100%, leeched garden compost (with a cow on the package, so some manure in there probably), cased with cactus soil. Both casing and sub sterilized by nuking in the microwave until steam starts to run out for 2-3 minutes, I don't do pasteurization anymore.

There is very little to no bruising when cutting and handling the stems, which is weird - this is the same culture that was aborting like crazy and all the pins would turn dark, dark blue when misted in my previous grows. Hmmmm.

EDIT: I'm retracting my statement above regarding lack of bruising, not sure why it seemed so. They bruise just fine. They did however melt into nothing as I dried them, but that's to be expected. The stems shrunk into a 24 gauge wire thickness haha.

What's the best type of agar to use for pans, in general? Specific recommendations much appreciated. I've had several plates start out strong and then stall, and a wondering if the rye water/LME is doing the job.

Could you please go into more detail about the NaOH CO2 scavenger you used?

If you want to test this out, the easiest and safest way would be to place your cased trays in a tub with the lid on with 1/2" of water on the bottom. Bake 50-100 grams of regular baking soda at 150 C / 300 F for 15 minutes (to turn it into sodium carbonate), let it cool for a minute or two and dissolve it in the bottom tub water. Some minimal fae may still help/be required, like opening the lid once a day or something.

I can go into the theory, but I don't want to bore anyone. 100 grams of heat-treated baking soda has a capacity to absorb 41 grams of CO2 (around 20 liters), which is plenty. In the wild, pans grow in grass fields where at ground level the CO2 is probably less than 200 PPM and there's wind. NaOH can absorb 2 times more CO2 than hreat-treated baking soda(hardly a significant advantage), but is nasty stuff you don't want to touch your skin. I just use it because my supermarket sells a quart of drain cleaner liquid (31% NaOH solution) for like a dollar. This method can be a game changer for fruiting woodlovers indoors in the fridge, but that's a topic for another thread

Here's a photo from an old research paper where they used this system for fruiting button mushrooms in a sealed chamber: They used calcium oxide granules instead because it's more suitable for being able to autoclave the whole thing (it's not hygroscopic and requires no water for the CO2 scavenging reaction), not because it's better than NaOH or baking soda:

Hello buddies:() I have been struggling to learn how pans behave since a while now

I put some spores in agar and they filled the plate before I even remember to take look at it
Like in 10 days, now I have bo clue which part looks more promising, some parts are flat and some fluffy , there is a mess in there !

Is there an experienced eye that can give me some insight please ?

Those could be thrown in garbage, but I am not experienced so wait for others. Color looks suspicious.

Your plates are too overgrown to see whats going on. You could try your luck and take a couple of random transfers and see how that
grows out on the new plates but I would also start new spores to have some more options in case things turn sour.

On MS plates you need to transfer out while growth is still small, not colliding in 10 different places, and has mycelium growing in clear areas of the plate.

Ekabpils: Truly epic flush! Fantastic job!!

This is really interesting stuff, thanks for sharing. Being able to use baking soda makes this approach more attractive for general growers as well.

Another rounds of cased trays in the fruiting chamber. I'm having awful luck this year. I need to spend some time redesigning the tent.

This is standard 50L box. The substrate height is 5.5 cm. I used one liter jar of spawn.

That is a very good yield first flush for a liter of spawn. Awesome job.

I assume the spawn ratio is quite low, around 1:7?

Any advice on this jar? It’ll be a month tomorrow. The agar wedge I dropped in was pretty small. I’ve given it a shake already. Wondering whether to give it another or toss it…
