I will remember all of this when I start back up. I definitely saw those same spots on agar and grain, but the grain eventually went green IIRC. (I should have kept taking notes.)

Did you see what looked like knots, except they developed UNDER the surface of the agar? There were also knots on top, but none of them developed into fruits. All of them would start bruising blue after a couple weeks. My plates had dark spots all over them within a few weeks, but they didn't grow into mold nor sporulate. I wish I had taken some pictures, but they looked like a contaminated mess!

Did a few transfers and kept my germ. Sent a few looking decent plates and spawn was always meh.
Germ plate finally started doing some subtle funky things. Gonna let it ride to see.

Well that's a T1. Germ ain't better obviously.

Most my pan plates get like that if I leave them for a while. All the Wild coast red spore plates I have kept from the LAGM have them on!

I just can't recall if the plates spotted... I only remember it on the jars. The first jar did produce gobs of fruit but there were a high number of aborts and the second flush completely aborted all pins that formed. Aborts are extremely, extremely rare for me. I just don't encounter them much. So perhaps this was some form of contamination, though nothing ever showed up in the tray - no molds or trich. But I had spots on another jar of peace river that grew this solid canopy that I posted the other day (pic re-posted below). It's on its second flush now and a day or two away from being finished. So I am still not sure the dots are connected to any contamination. It could just be something a lot of pans do. I bet the first time people grew tamps, they thought they were screwed because tamp mycelium does really weird things because of the sclerotia formation.

I'm really doing bad this round with pans. Trying to run too much shit all at once and can't find a happy medium.

Here's a closeup of those myc bumps.

Sketchy as hell to my eye.

Hindsight, that's quite the canopy there!

That's relieving to know that they never showed obvious contamination. I can't remember if my PRF jars definitely contaminated or not. I may have just assumed they were bad because of the spots and didn't want to take the chance. Looking back at it, that's probably what happened.

I knew that Pans could produce pseudo sclerotia, but these looked different from other pictures I had seen. I had never thought about the first people to grow tamps and what they must have thought!

With Coversall's addition, I will accept that there is a consensus that Pan myc can do some weird things without it being contamination.

Dang Panny, that jar is FULL! I'm surprised there was enough room to shake it up. I'm not talking smack, you are making full use of your jar volume and making it work. That myc looks good.

I ended up going full OCD when it came to removing the black sunflower seeds from my WBS mix. They didn't seem to hurt anything, but I did get some nasty looking ooze that came out of them.

Rocky, I wish I could manage more runs at the same time, but similar things happen to me. I even manage to mislabel things as mentioned on the last page. I've learned and accepted that I have to limit myself or I'll mix things up. I agree with you on that plate looking sketchy, but I'm going to send some to grain the next time I have a similar looking plate.

What LC recipe do you use for Pans?

I wish I had a solid answer for you, but I've only tried one pan LC. I used an agar wedge to inoculate it, but nothing ever grew off the wedge. At least my sterile technique was good, because NOTHING grew in that jar.

Everything I've read says that standard light malt extract (LME) or standard dextrose recipes will work fine. At that time, I made 2 LC jars, EXACTLY the same recipe in each, and PCed at the same time. One was inoculated with an agar wedge from a cubensis culture, and it took off and did great, just like normal.

The only thing I can figure, was that I may have shaken the LC jar so hard that it killed the mycelium, but I don't really believe that. I don't know why it didn't work.

I will say that with the grain to bulk ratio requiring far less grain than cubensis grows, that I hardly have enough grain to warrant making a LC for pans.

Cubensis requires enough grain that I do feel it's worthwhile, and I know a cubensis LC will stay alive in a fridge for a long time. Pans have somewhere around a 50/50 chance of dying in the fridge after a few weeks, based on the results that have been reported here. That is yet another reason I'm not motivated to make LCs with pans, as long term storage is half the reason I like using it.

I know some of the talented growers here use it though, so wait until you hear some feedback from them. They might have a great recipe or tip to share.

Pulled the plug on these wild coast red spores. Will see if the clones I took work out, but the rest of the fruit were looking like the ugly, small, retard fruit I got first time round. Nothing I wanted to clone. Looks like a nice grow from this print is still out my reach...

Got enough for a trip or two, was happy with the big fruit that came from it.

Standard.
1g LME, 500ml water.
I tend to make 5 100ml broths from that mix in 250ml media bottles with no stirrer and unmoddified lids.

Those are great!!! I love the rugged caps on them.

I know what you mean by losing track of the number of flushes.

I am wanting to get a grease pencil so I can write on my glass trays. A sharpie wipes off too easily in such wet conditions. I've used masking tape, but then it becomes a mold vector after a couple of weeks.

I'm wanting to be able to mark the tray for what variety it is, possibly the date it went into FC, and also use hash marks to record the number of flushes, all directly on the tray.

Once I start back up, I also want to try some plastic trays like JOC's been using. I want to try some deeper substrate trays, plus have proper lids to use during the colonization. I'm not sure what kind of marking tool would be best for plastic. I want something that is semi-permanent, but removable after the tray is spent.

Anyone have recommendations?

Id recommend felt pens such as Sharpies. Works great on plastics of all types.

Great grows Hindsight! Really impressive flushes :takingnotes:

I just recently bought a "compact" shoebox similar to yours Hindsight for my manure-based substrate that will eventually go in it. Still in the agar stage, but great, clean mycelium! Gotta love vendor-spores. Those compact shoeboxes Looks like the perfect size for Pans :cool2:

In the two weeks since I’ve last posted on this thread there has been so much shared! Thank you everyone for sharing all your beautiful grows and insights. Learning about Nec D from this thread is super cool.

I’ve got an update on my Pan cyan (Hawaii). I gave the grains a shake to help them along. There was only about a 4” circle of myc, but they’ve recovered well!

Looks like I’ll be joining you all soon in sharing some beautiful pictures of these guys

Sweet! You should take some prints and make them available to spread around. I've only found Hawaiian spores available in syringes from vendors. I'm not sure how old they are, so a fresher supply would be amazing!
