Yeah that’s the tricky thing I’ve noticed about pans I’ve seen several people pull off a grow or two with very unorthodox methods but even using trusted tech/mats getting consistent good results from pans can be very tricky and takes a lot of practice, That’s why whenever people ask me if they can be grown in a traditional mono I will say yes they can but it’s kind of a shot in the dark I have yet to see anyone put up multiple pan grows back to back in a traditional tub or with any alternate tech for that matter especially across multiple pan strains. Shit even I have to go thru a period of re-adjustment whenever my mats change. So while the occasional couple zips from a buddy can definitely be pulled off it seems I would imagine it’s even more difficult than it is with manure  and optimal fruiting conditions to pull consistent worthwhile results.

I think the thing with pans (and I ain’t got the experience y’all do so I’m just spouting here) is culture matters more. Like cubes will grow in a trash bucket and people usually only focus on the culture if they want consistent potency or big yields. I think pans need the culture work for more colonization vigor and the ability to fruit well. Potency is baked in but the rest is so finicky that if you want any kind of result from ms you need to be sure everything else is totally optimized. That’s my layman’s take on it.

I was thinking of finding good genetics and trying to stabilize them / pushing them towards mono tub conditions. Clone, print, clone, etc.
and see where that goes.

Getting consistent grows in mono tubs is hard but the way I set it up makes usually for a decent grow.

Still have to adjust things, e.g. I used to do a top layer to cover the grains during colonization, won't do that again and other stuff.

Exactly pasty!
If you have a kick ass iso that someone has already done all the work on you will likely have a good chance of being able to pull off a low tech grow however while running through MS to find a good cloning culture to create that iso you are going to run into a lot of issues with just a low tech tub and you are going to have to buck shot the situation until you get lucky and then clone

I think a good culture is > 90% of it. And man it can take a lot of shit grows
to find it too. With cubes you can usually find something through cloning
easily but I just don't see that with pans. I'm probably odd man out here, but
I have never had a great grow from a clone- cloning from some crazy cluster
or a nice looking fruit.

Yeah y’all just saw me do it with Texas. I ran MS across a few different pan strains hit good with Texas. duplicated it a few times, bulked up on prints of it, And now I’m back to hunting across a few different pan strains sometimes I’ll get lucky and MS will throw me up a full tray just for love but I cannot rely on that. For me to ensure I get enough of the specific pan strain Prints I need when I need them I have to clone. I cloned Bisp a few days back it should be next to show love

jake, you obviously have great success with clones. My luck with it has been poor.
I'm still in the MS camp because the amount of work to hunt for that good clone
is just immense and I'm lazy as fuck :lol:

Lol it’s not that bad with the tents that’s my biggest aversion to the tub chambers and why I moved away from them after building that massive set up I did originally because the hunt can be tedious and the ability to run multiple trays across different strains at a time really comes in handy for my purposes because part of growing pans is failing no matter what

ya i agree 100% on culture.

also in my opinion i think ppl print from too many less than average fruits at times and it makes things much more difficult and even getting a decent initial ms grow for clone hunting is a pain in the ass it seems.

Yeah well you got to figure everyone who gets them their first time or first couple times is definitely going to want to print so you get a lot of whatever I could get Prints. that’s another reason I hunt for ISO’s that way my prints come from canopy trays and there should be a lil less working going down hill

why? My grains in trays dry out after a few days if I don't use a top layer

I did my last tub without a top layer and with top layer I mean a thin layer of substrate. Mixed the sub and grains thoroughly and it seemed
that the surface was colonizing more evenly vs. with a top layer. Didn't have any problem with grains drying out and can't imagine that this is a
thing with basically no FAE and sufficient hydration, I just carried that habit over from cube cultivation when fruiting at spawn.

Can anyone confirm or negate this?

You never want exposed spawn, always cover with a thin layer of your bulk
