No, Bernie does not want open borders.  It's a shame that so many of his opponents lie about him and give him an unfair reputation.

And free healthcare is something most immigrants already had in their home countries.  I got free healthcare when I was in Russia, why can't we do the same?

Judaism dictates, black on white, that Jews are the chosen people and are different from anyone else. See Falcon's post above - he recveived free emergency healthcare when visiting Russia and so believes we should give free healthcare to all immigrants. Metoo thinks it is not a sound argument because many of the countries whose citizens knock on the US door are either at war or failed states and would not be able to offer free healthcare to a visiting US dude. Not saying the humanitarian principle is wrong, only that a reciprocity argument is weak.

I'm pretty sure he meant that it's shameful for a country as rich as ours to deny its citizens and visitors something a poor country like Russia, with a GDP smaller than some states in the U.S., can seemingly provide without much trouble.

Visitors are not the same as immigrants - in case of the US they are all forewarned to get travel insurance. This is another guise of the old socialist view that if you can afford something you should be made to pay for those who cannot. I reject this argument in its generality because it would mean that we reward irresponsibility, failure and dysfunction at personal, social and national levels. Charity is a different issue - you are free to contribute your declared income to NGOs paying for healthcare of your selected social subgroup.

It's a shame that people need to buy health insurance when visiting the US.  Conservatives seem to argue the poor should either go without insurance or have even less than the little they have.

I agree, we shouldn't reward such people.  In the old Soviet Union, people who chose not to work, or whose work didn't cut it, didn't get paid.

Are you saying the compassionate should subsidize the poor rather than people who can better afford it?  I don't think we should punish the compassionate among us.

Voters will decide which version they prefer. Meetoo thinks allowing people in and paying for them is generally not a great idea because you end up encouraging them to take advantage of the hosts. Sweden is in deep trouble as a result of recent uncurbed immigration - they are also a totalitarian democracy so maybe not a great example. It got so bad the state social services can take your child away in Sweden if you are known to express anti-immigrantion views. Germany is also not a happy place - my sister lives there and we talk about it regularly. Russia does not have this problem because, guess what, no one wants to emigrate there so they can afford free emergency healthcare for the visitors. Btw - having grown up in Easter Europe I suspect there is some ineffective and unenforcable mechanism to try to get a refund from visitors but probably no one even bothers to fill out the forms etc.

Except under Obama, the number of Americans without health insurance increased every year. Health care and immigration are two different issues. Conservatives want to pretend they are one to legitimate screwing Americans.
