tho another fun note
the historical progressives in Manitoba were not supporters of workers

not because they supported the rich, but because farmers and workers were not as closely tied as they are in the modern economy

Quote:
The Progressive Party of Manitoba, Canada, was a political party that developed from the United Farmers of Manitoba (UFM), an agrarian movement that became politically active following World War I. A successor to the Manitoba Grain Growers' Association, the UFM represented the interests of farmers frustrated with traditional political parties.

Unlike the United Farmers, the Progressive Party of Manitoba never made any serious effort to cooperate with the labour politicians. The Winnipeg General Strike was unpopular among farmers, and the Progressive Party of Manitoba was not generally regarded as friendly to labour.

A number of "farmer candidates" ran in Manitoba's provincial election of 1920. They were not an organized group, and had no pretensions of forming government; nevertheless, twelve of these candidates were elected—eight as supporters of the UFM, and four as independents. Had the UFM run a united campaign, it probably would have won the election.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_Party_of_Manitoba

Quote:
The Winnipeg general strike of 1919 was one of the most famous and influential strikes in Canadian history. For six weeks, May 15 to June 26, more than 30,000 strikers brought economic activity to a standstill in Winnipeg, Manitoba, which at the time was Canada's third largest city. In the short term, the strike ended in arrests, bloodshed and defeat, but in the long run it contributed to the development of a stronger labour movement and the tradition of social democratic politics in Canada.

This can work in the US for sure. Give Bernie an M16, a WWJD bracelet and a southern accent FTW!

It's actually the furthest right major party we have at the provincial level
and they are frequently criticized for favouring businesses and cutting social safety nets

but Canada's right is to the left of the US left
because the DNC sure ain't progressive or liberal lol

Well shiiiiit, that’s some false advertising, yo.

But it says a lot about Canada when the furthest right party openly supports decreasing the wealth gap. Wish I could move...I hear there’s like a Florida worth of ethnic Ukrainians in Canada too. How does one become a lumberjack? Im tired of paying $1400 for rent :rofl2:

Ehhhhh, don't trust all they claim
the party line is also to support health care for all, the systematic aim of the Premier has instead been to close emergency services, fire healthcare workers, and try to move towards privatizing health care

the party line is to be inclusive to all,
one of the first controversies the Premier had in getting into office was attempting to crack down on traditional Native hunting rights

he's at the top of the wealth gap himself, has a second home down in Costa Rica where he spends the winters to avoid the snow

at least "to his credit" he grew up poor
but now he is alienated from the experience of what it is like to be poor, and makes policy decisions based on his current standing

Initially had a long explanation of how the party came to be known as the PCs in the first place
and how the Progressives have long since split off
and the national party designation is now simply the Conservative Party of Canada
with the Progressive party being a wholly different entity
but it got eaten

so to trim the fat down to the actual historical instance that impacted the name itself:
Quote:
The party adopted the "Progressive Conservative" party name in 1942 when Manitoba Premier John Bracken, a long-time leader of that province's Progressive Party, agreed to become leader of the federal Conservatives on condition that the party add Progressive to its name. Despite the name change, most former Progressive supporters continued to support the Liberal Party of Canada or the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, and Bracken's leadership of the Conservative Party came to an end in 1948. Many Canadians simply continued to refer to the party as "the Conservatives".

in Manitoba, and Canada more generally, the Greens and the NDP have more of a progressive-populist bent to their policies

Thanks for the historical perspective but still no wiser as to why you thought they are "not progressivism". The dictionary definition of progressive is "favouring social reform" and, based on their manifesto, they certainly have some ideas in this space. Moreover, they identify as "progressive" through their name. I do not get why a party which fits in the definition of "progressive" and identifies as such does not qualify.

By that logic, Trump is a progressive 🤷🏻‍♂️
His social reforms were putting kids in cages, cutting corporate taxes, and building a border wall - a sharp contrast to previous norms.

there is more to the political philosophy of progressivism than a three word definition for the word progressive

part of the historical perspective was explanation as to how the party system in Canada changes names through mergers
and how since there have been an absence of Conservative-leaning parties in most provinces
the party in various provinces has not be able to merge and choose a name that they feel better identifies their existing values

the national party merged with Canadian Alliance and dropped the Progressive nomenclature
and in the province of Alberta the Progressive Conservatives merged with the Wild Rose party to become the United Conservative Party
British Columbia has a Conservative party, because when they had the Progressive Conservative name in the years after 1942
the party dissolved after an alliance with the Liberals, and was refounded as the Conservative Party

you would have to ask Pallister if he identifies himself as progressive because you identify him as progressive tho

... and stopping illegal immigration, expelling gang members, promoting employment etc. That is exactly my point. Anyone favouring social change can call themselves progressive - meaning advocating progress in the social area. In a relative sense Bernie's vision involves more social change than Trump's so he is arguably more progressive.

What I am saying is that to avoid confusion political descriptors like "progressive", "liberal" should be used in their official (dictionary) meaning and progressive does not mean "supporting workers over billionaires" - it means something else.

“Progressivism in the 21st century is significantly different from the historical progressivism of the 19th-20th centuries. According to Princeton economics professor Thomas C. Leonard, "At a glance, there is not much here for 21st-century progressives to claim kinship with. Today’s progressives emphasize racial equality and minority rights, decry U.S. imperialism, shun biological ideas in social science, and have little use for piety or proselytizing." However, both historical progressivism and the modern movement shares the notion that the free markets lead to economic inequalities that must be ameliorated.[64] Many modern progressives have used the term "new progressivism" to make this distinction.“

Couldn’t find a Miriam Webster definition, but...I mean, it kinda does, dude.

Or, fine, w.e., call it “new progressives” if you wanna be a weirdo about it

Not sure which dictionary you are quoting from but even in your post I could not find a claim that "progressive means supporting workers over billionaires". It is perfectly ok to say that many modern supporters of workers identify as progressives but that is NOT what the term means. It may change in the future but at present progressive - in the sense we are discussing it - means "favouring social reform".

I use "progressive" to generally cover the left because, at present, they are the ones favouring social reform vs conservatives generally preferring status quo.

Trump campaigned on economic nationalism and the cornerstone of that thesis centered upon the massive economic inequality that exists today.

I realize that the vast majority of Trump supporters didn't and don't see themselves as progressives, yet that wanted significant change from the economic status quo.

Here's the Progressive party of 1912's platform (which was the herald of a lot of these things we take for granted becoming law) - It's a good outline of what generally progressivism entails in the US:

Say what you will about him, (specifically the imperialist side) but without Teddy Roosevelt's efforts for progressivism, the US would be a lot more fucked up.

"
To that end, the platform called for:

    >Strict limits and disclosure requirements on political campaign contributions

    >Registration of lobbyists

    >Recording and publication of Congressional committee proceedings

In the social sphere, the platform called for:

    >A national health service to include all existing government medical agencies

    >Social insurance, to provide for the elderly, the unemployed, and the disabled

    >Limiting the ability of judges to order injunctions to limit labor strikes

    >A minimum wage law for women

    >An eight-hour workday

    >A federal securities commission

    >Farm relief

    >Workers' compensation for work-related injuries

    >An inheritance tax

The political reforms proposed included:

    >Women's suffrage

    >Direct election of senators

    >Primary elections for state and federal nominations

    >Easier amending of the United States Constitution

The platform also urged states to adopt measures for "direct democracy", including:

    >The recall election (citizens may remove an elected official before the end of his term)

    >The referendum (citizens may decide on a law by popular vote)

    >The initiative (citizens may propose a law by petition and enact it by popular vote)

    >Judicial recall (when a court declares a law unconstitutional, the citizens may override that ruling by popular vote)

Some interesting opinions from the UK:

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-11785483

Yet another word has had a reversal of its' own definition. Those using the word progressive are regressive, destroying everything that true progressives have improved. Ian, Derby, England

In the US, if you're a Socialist, you call yourself a progressive, because it sounds like you're "for progress", even though in reality, Socialism is completely "regressive", given that it has failed every time that it has been tried, leaving countries economically stagnant or devastated. Rougie, London

I understand "progressive" in the context of politics to relate to the word "progress" - literally, continuing towards a goal (presumably of making things better). No matter how disingeniously the term may actually be applied! Andrew, Glasgow, UK

Progressive seems to involve taking money from those who work hard, scrimping to get by and hand it to those who rely on the state to do everything for them. The rules are rigged to ensure that those who do the least and put most strain on the system get the most. Anyone who protests that this isnt fair is labelled regressive. Geo, Glasgow

Another word that seems to have undergone a change in meaning when it comes to politics is "new". Judging by its recent use, it now seems so mean "not," hence New Labour = Not Labour and the Lib Dems' claim to be "new progressives" says nothing more than they are in fact "not progressives". Cameron, Oxford, UK

Merriam-Webster is an American dictionary and defines "progressive" (noun) as:

One believing in a moderate political change and especially social improvement by government action

Nothing about supporting workers over billionaires. The problem is not that it is impossible to work out what progressive means but rather that it is commonly taken to mean something other than the dictionaries define

Whatever word you associate with; your political philosophy encompasses alot of neoliberalism:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neoliberalism

Neoliberalism or neo-liberalism[1] is the 20th-century resurgence of 19th-century ideas associated with laissez-faire economic liberalism and free market capitalism,[2]:7[3] which constituted a paradigm shift away from the post-war Keynesian consensus that had lasted from 1945 to 1980.[4
