If Sanders is the contender he will get obliterated - both in debates and electorate vote count. At this stage people will generally say to pollsters yeah, Sanders, whatever. But when presented with his whacky ideas - and Trump will make sure we know that Bernie wants to open the borders and give immigrants free healthcare - punters will bail out on him.

Also, Sanders cannot lie. He is ideologically pure, like Pol Pot or Castro - which will allow everyone see the full magnitude of his possession. This is why Trump prefers him to others as an opponent. Biden had the stability factor at least in peoples minds so Trump knocked him out early.
